Margo is actually ranked by the WBC, but Jose Sulaiman has NEVER, EVER been one to pass up a chance to have a big name wear the Green belt, even if they immediately vacate. Manny did it when he won the JrLW from Marquez, he did it when he beat David Diaz, and I'm 100% positive he'll drop it when he goes back down to WW after this fight.
Neither one of these guys are deserving of fighting for a vacant title. The system is a joke and a farce.
Do you think that a champion from one weight class moving up, should go straight to the bottom of the rankings? Should his previous achievements count for nothing? Did RJJ "deserve" a shot as 168lb king Toney? Did Leonard "deserve" Hagler? It's just the way boxing works and it's unrealistic for a champion to move up in weight and start fighting nobodies to build his way up the rankings.
Unless I'm mistaken, Mayweather never fought castillo and Oscar for vacant titles? The question the thread starter is raising is how does pac and margarito get a shot at the vacant WBC belt at 154 when Pac isn't even ranked in the division. It would be different if Margo held the belt and chose to defend it against Pac. But he doesn't. There are a number of fighters who should have a shot at the vacant WBC belt before both these men.
I have no problems whatsoever with pac fighting for a title at 154. my problems are as follows 1) fighting margo when there are many better fights out there 2) if it is a 154 title fight, then fight at 154, not a catchweight! 3) fighting for a vacant belt when their are 3 champs already is the easy route imo.
No one wants part of Paul Williams. No one did when he fought as a Welter, and now he's using wanting to get a fight with Pac (not happening) to delay his rematch with martinez, which HBO has been pushing for. He's better off staying at JrMW or MW.
...or for leonard going up to middleweight and fight hagler for a title, then going up to super middleweight and fight Lalonde for another title.
