Back in the 70's and 80's because there were only 2 titles - that were usually held by the same person anyway - you'd have to beat a world class fighter (or several) to get a shot. Conteh had more talent than Ricky but the drink and women were the problem. Ricky made the most of what he had until he started stuffing his face.
