de nero trained hard and looked the part physicaly but we should leave it at that. the filming and choreography flatters those that are not in the know but to anyone who boxed at any kind of competative level its insult to sugest he could have went pro. maybe lamotta meant bobbys fitness and weight was close to that of a pro. i seriously doubt lamotta meant de nero could exchange punches in a competative situation worthy of a real fight.

I've seen loads of "professional" boxers who are NOT even fit, and cant fight, and are possibly ten years older than they say.

The idea being spouted on this thread that you have to be really quite good to fight professionally, or a step above a decent amateur level, is not reflected in the actual happenings of the professional scene.

I dont know about DeNiro, but I'd take LaMotta's word for it. DeNiro's obviously no slouch when it comes to dedication, commitment, and fitness. I doubt you'd have had to look far to find a few "licensed professionals" who he could beat in a 4-rounder.

yes we have seen all them. they dont want to win and DONT fight. Thats not saying they CANT. just because they either chose not fight or when they are lets face it hidiously over matched dosnt mean they cant. im sure we can guarantee DeNiro could match them at losing. We cant guarnatee deniro can fight since hes not a pro (or ever did do) it competativly or for a living.

To make it as a living and a real boxer you have to be quite a lot beter than an actor. would sean connery make it as a real spy?

Threre are some usless, bogus fighters out there that should not be licenced. deniro could beat them since they dont want to win and get paid the same if they dont. It would be a bogus fight though. lots of people have beat one bogus fighter and retired caling themselves former pro boxers but It does not make him worthy of being a pro. just a bogus pro.

I think thats exactly what he meant.

3 round of sparring a day is nothing. I do at least 3 rounds of sparring in the gym everyday its nothing. Its really not a lot. Some great pro fighters could train by going 20+ rounds a day. Sometimes without stopping.

Im sure there were days where they sparred at least 10 rounds, taking large breaks in between. Thats honestly not that hard to believe.

And he never said he could have been a contender for the belt or anything. He just said he could have fought professionally.

Will Smith took actual head and body shots from profesional fighters while filming Ali.

One of them (dont remember who) expressed the opinion that he could have boxed profesionaly.

Well in all honesty, i think that both could have been pros and would have been huge, easily earning enough money to support themselves, but then again, it has more to do with public popularity than anything else. In the 80s, a fully professional and sanctioned Sylvester Stallone vs Arnold Schwarzenagger fight could have been absolutely huge and on par or better than Tyson's pay per view fights. And today Lindsay Lohan vs Paris Hilton would do decent numbers.

Look at most of the the Australian Rugby league fighters, marketability is more important than ability to fight nowadays.

maybe, but to look in the miror and call yourself a fighter you need to know you can beat a guy who wants to beat you, who has trained and can fight and beat other guys. those actors would make money but they would wimp out with an excuse even against another actor. they only do interviews if certain questions they have rehearsed are in the contract for christ sake!! what are they gona do if they get hit hard?
listen, boxersize is great. It gets you remarcably fit but its not boxing.

    :good:lol:

Yes, because LaMotta's "word" means anything. He wasn't a violent psychotic, bi-polar like individual who well into his 80's/90's said he didn't **** a young girl, she "wanted it" just didn't know it.

People on here take other's "word" a little too seriously. Words don't mean much in the great scheme of reality and all the things we actually know to be fact.

If we can stop jerking off great actors simply because we also want to believe they could be great boxers for a moment, here's some reality.

A 50 year old Carlos Monzon knocked out dedicated (great even!) actor Mickey Rourke, with the first punch of their fight. Cold.

Rourke was dedicated enough to gain 27 pounds of muscle only a few years ago, while middle aged, for the movie The Wrestler.

    There's De Niro level dedication.

On top of this, Rourke actually had 8 professional fights.

That's a actual fighter fighting an actor. That's how far he got.

Sounds to me like he was speaking hyperbolically about the extent of the training.

Besides, they say this about everyone. After the Rocky movies there was endless discussion about whether Stallone could have made it as a real fighter, and I remember after TV wrestler Roddy Piper trainined with Lou Duva, Duva said that he hits so hard he would like to get him a shot agaisnt Michael Spinks.

Its all bull****, really. Even boxing people get stars in their eyes.

Stallone had some interesting things to say about getting reality checks about hanging with real fighters, It's been posted on this forum before. He did some rehearsing/sparring with Duran, for example, and when he complained about Duran hitting him too hard Roberto said: "Maricon! I barely tapped him.".
