ye with hindsight everyone knows how shot odlh was, but at the time i dont think many people gave pacman a chance.

he had one fight at lightweight against david diaz and then jumped up to 147 to take on a man who had barely lost to floyd in a very close fight. i mean that takes some balls. marquez had unified the lw division when he jumped up and fought floyd at a catchweight, but pacman did after just one fight against arguably the worst lw out there.

i dont think he gets enough credit for this, too many people dismiss it cos of how shot odlh was, but that is all said with hindsight. marquez gets credit for tryin to take on floyd at ww and i think he had a bigger chance of victory than pac did.

in terms of the victory itself, most people would have beaten odlh that night, but in terms of taking the fight, i think pac deserves **** loads of credit.

Marquez was a 4/1 underdog. I believe Pac was a 2 or 3/1 underdog. Although Pac was outsized(at least we thought he would be, he ended weighing more than Hoya on fight night), he was faster, younger, and held a stylistic advantage over Oscar. Oscar was also past it and had to come to down to a weight he hadn't been at in several years. Meanwhile, Marquez was facing a guy who was younger, faster, stronger, who was fighting at his normal weight class, and who held a stylistic advantage over Marquez. Marquez's only advantage was that he had been more active. Marquez was outgunned in almost every way. Pac was only at a perceived size disadvantage.

i remember the calzaghe boys being excited at the prospect of having joe as the #1 p4p fighter in the world back then when pac is about to fight oscar. everyone knew it was a sure loss for pacquiao and thinks he was only cashing-in.

you "forget" to mention that marquez had unified a division and jumped up from 135 to 144 in a fight against a man coming off a two year retirement.

at the time pac fought oscar, he had won one fight at lw, against a very **** opponent, and oscar had only lost to floyd on a sd. im sure there are some people who think oscar deserved to win that fight.

pac jumped from 130 to 135 to 147 in successive fights. oscar had dropped from lmw to ww, but he had fought steve forbes at a catchweight of 150, so he only had to drop 3 pounds. this another fact often overlooked.

In a way yes Pacquiao deserve credit but in reality that wasn't the De la hoya that fought Chavez, Whitaker, Trinidad, Vargas. Oscar was clearly dehydrated by moving down to 147 pounds for the first time in over 8 years.

I've said this 100 times that the reason everybody (except me) thought De la hoya would easily beat Pacquiao cause of size that's all. Nobody never think in their brain of what moving down to 147 pounds would affect De la hoya. On other sites, i was looking at pictures of De la hoya in training camp and that picture show me he look really really weak. He look so damn skinny it's like he came back from africa. And the rumar of Oscar getting beat up by the murderer Valero were indeed true.

    Yes, which is very little.

Ive been through this a 1000 times; Oscar entered the ring at 147 Lbs FFS and looked and fought like a dehydrated geriatric with full blown aids.
Calling him a shell is an insult to shells.
Woody Allen would have been a tough fight for Oscar that night, let alone the PFP1

So what. Marquez is not as good as Floyd. Marquez is a counterpuncher who had to fight a bigger, better, stronger, faster, counterpuncher who was also the better defender with the better reflexes. It's a no brainer who's going to win that fight everytime. Floyd was still relatively young, and keeps himself in good shape, so the layoff wouldn't affect him as much as it would most fighters.

Nobody except Oscar fans thought Oscar beat Floyed. Again , who cares if Manny was jumping two weight classes? Manny had been coming into his fights weighing at least 144 lbs. for the past two or three years. He was draining himself to stay at a weight class that he was already too big for. So him going up in weight is not as problematic as Oscar going down in weight. Hell, Manny ended up weighing more on fight night.

This is a stupid argument. Again, Marquez was at least a 4/1 dog who was outgunned in every department. Pac was only around a 2/1 dog, and had several advantages against Oscar. Use some common sense here. It's easy to see which one had a better chance of winning going into those fights. The results clearly reflect this.

im not debating that marquez is as good as floyd, he obviously aint.

pac weighing more is a moo point, the debate is about how much credit pac should get for TAKING the fight. that is all with hindsight where we see how shot and drained odlh was. we didnt know that would be the case.

the reason i bring up forbes is because everyone bands on about how drained odlh was. but at the time, the reality was this. odlh last fight was 3 pounds north of WW. pac had 1 fight at lw before jumping up and fighting oscar. i think he deserves massive respect for it.

i didnt say he deserves credit for BEATING oscar, i said he deserves credit for FIGHTING oscar. so oscars ring weigh is a moo point, as is how eeight drained he was.

at the time pac took the fight oscar had just fought at 150 and pac had 1 fight at 135. yet he had the balls to jump and take oscar on in a fight many thought he would lose.

of course he deserves credit, he beat the guy who was standing in front of him. Beristain said DLH was in fantastic shape. It's only easy to say that DLH was weight drained or whatever since he got beaten so badly. It's really a no-win situation for Pac, he won as a massive underdog, and he doesn't get the deserved credit.
