It is obviously true that Mayweather has better technique. It isn't a secret that Ali had some serious technical flaws. There is absolutely nothing wrong with her statement. That being said, technique is only one aspect of a great boxer...

I don't think Ali is the greatest boxer of all time, I wouldn't even put him in the top ten. However, he did fight the best and he deserves all the credit in the world for that. We know that Ali was great because he fought the best; we really can't say the same thing about the Welter Weight version of Floyd.

I've seen a good amount of Ali fights and I must say the dude was great to watch, but despite all his speed, foot work, intellect and skill. He took a great deal of punishment and is paying for it today. It could be the quality of competition Ali faced vs Floyd, but a good defense with his skill, speed and ability would have served him well no matter the opponent it front of him. Floyd has faced some good fighters himself, and through out his career has manage to sustain very little damage in 41 fights. Considering how Laila can't enjoy her fathers true personality and verbal sense of humor like the world had endure once before, due to his illness from excessive punishment. I can't help but think if she looks at Floyds defensive style, and probably wonders how it could have saved her Father from his current fate today. Who's better between the two will always be a matter of opinion. The only true way to see who's better is if these two went head to head, and being that will never happen all one can do is speculate the out come.

This is a much longer reply than you probably would have wanted, I apologize...

I have never really created my own top ten ATG list. When I do get around to doing it I would really have to sit down and get a good handle on where I rank all the boxers I appreciate greatly, I don't want to just throw something together. For example, I love Freddie Pendleton, he is one of my favorite boxers, but he doesn't belong in the top ten.

So how do I know that I wouldn't put Ali in my top ten? Well... The super shady decision against Norton hurts him in my eyes as does the blatant glove ripping incident. Also, his technical flaws really bothered me. If he had maintained a better guard he would have never been caught by Cooper in the first place. But more than that, I am not convinced he was better than Frasier. I can't count the second match where he was allowed to flagrantly cheat and pull Frasier's head down throughout the match.

Also, I am one of those crazy people who believe that Tyson was probably better than Ali... Despite having no heart, in his prime, the guy was the perfect fighter.

Another big part of why Ali wouldn't make it is because I don't tend to rate the Heavy Weight division as highly as many other weight divisions.

While I can't give you a complete list I can give you a couple of names that would be in it for sure. Tommy Hearns, Pernell Whitaker and Sugar Ray Robinson (super typical). I would also be tempted to put Archie Moore on the list (yes I know Ali beat him, but not the best version of him). Also, maybe Arguello?

However, there are so many eras and each one have some truly great boxers in it, so I can't say with certainty who else would make it. Hell, a few active boxers are only a couple of really good matches away from being prime candidates for my top ten list...

Please understand that I don't have anything against Ali, I believe he was great. I just wouldn't put him in my top ten all time greats list...
