How can anyone evaluate this matchup without footage? Resumes don't make fights; styles make fights.

Jones is a caliber of athlete unknown to guys of Greb's era. That doesn't mean he would win, but to dismiss him based on resume is ill-sighted.

What do you base this statement on ? (caliber of athlete ) .. I find it interesting that many posters here think speed, power and straight punching started with the black murderer's row . This is pretty much based on 100 year old fight films that either misrepresent style or feature some of the less visually pleasing ...

Greb fought terrific fighters, many of whom would easily dominate today.

Jones wide UD, Greb was great for his time but boxing has evolved and Jones level of ability and dominance is on a whole other level, Greb doesn't even have a punchers chance

Athletes have evolved profoundly since Greb's era. This is true not only in boxing but other sports, too. Just look at those sports where performance is empirically measurable (e.g., track and field).

Time doesn't sit still although memories do, and that's why the old-timers frequently get overrated here in these hypothetical matchups versus contemporary fighters.

Evolved since the advent of PEDs maybe. Anyone who thinks evolution evolves at that rate in less than 100 years doesnt understand science, biology, physics, anthropology, or much else for that matter...

Just out of curiousity, if fighters are so evolved physiologically and in terms of performance how do you account for modern fighters of all weight classes barely being able to go 12 rounds and old timers like Gans and Nelson fighting gruelling fights for 40+ rounds? I guess stamina has devolved in that time?

Fighters were the same in any epoch. A lot of old-timers (considered all-time great or very good) showed lack of guts or lack of stamina even in very short bouts. Useless arguments.

    *yawn*

Hasn't this myth been debunked enough? Boxing isn't track and field, people. There's a whole lot more to it than athleticism. It's much more a sport based around your mentality than anything else.

Things do evolve beyond the Darwinian definition, but I think you know that. Music, art, politics and everything else evolve over time. We do know that people are taller now, too, than was the case during Greb's era. The amount of protein consumed bears a great impact on that, obviously.

The nature of those very long bouts was starkly different from fights fought at a modern pace.

As for PEDs, how do you explain this chart? This is the history of the world record in the 100 meters.

:lol:Music and art have evolved now? Gimme a break, if anything, some of the most noticable declines in society have taken place in those areas.

That's silly. Track and field's advances aren't due entirely to athleticism, either. All sports have made progress, and any competition — athletic or otherwise — features a critical mental component.
