Longer arms have to travel farther.

    Ali definitely was faster.

Patterson might've been faster than both, certainly faster than Tyson in his prime.

Now that you bring it up the infamous " Phantom Punch " must've been pretty damn fast cause I didnt see it connect.

for jabbing and that sneaky right hand, Ali. for infighting, that would be Tyson. I'd have Ali, Tyson, Patterson, Tunney as the fastest HW's I've ever seen. Even though Sanders wasn't a great fighter, his performance over Wlad will always be a memorable one to me. He was fighting like a bat out of hell.

I haven´t read through all the post in this thread so perhaps someone allready has written this, but I say Ali was faster. Tysons punches was much shorter and very fast. Alis was longer and still as fast if not faster. So yes there has never been such a fast heavyweight as Muhammad Ali in the 60´s
    IMO
    Cheers

we're talking about a guy that arguably beat the toughest comp in hw history, regained the title 3 times, had enormous cultural significance worldwide, more so than any other heavyweight champion...

if ali is overrated then every fighter is a hype job, dont be an idiot
