I start this thread to discuss something which i dont think has been covered in enough detail with prior threads. In a few other threads running at the moment, one particular issue has me intrigued. The question is what are floyd mayweather's weaknesses in the ring? Does he have any bad habits or things which, for example a fighter like pacquiao could expoit.

I say this because manny's deficiencies, habits or whatever you want to call it are fairly obvious. Two of his major criticisms in his early career were that he was too left hand happy (imo he has a lethal left hand which worked), and also that his balance was often bad. JMM 2 in one of the early rounds is a good example of pacquiao's poor balance when he is hit with that huge left hook mid-air. Now pacquiao appears to be far more balanced both in his stance and movement and also his ability to use both hands.

Over to PBF. Here, mayweather's weakness are not so obvious. The main reason is due to him being schooled properly since very young to box the way he does. But the question is, does he still have certain tendencies or weaknesses as a fighter which pacquiao could exploit. Ill list a few things which i have noticed to get things rolling:

-Starting slow - Either mayweather doesnt watch tape or he takes a few rounds to get the opponents timing down, he is vulnerable in those first four rounds.

-Muscle endurance and fatigue. When for example he was going toe to toe with corley in that fight he seems to get arm weary quickly, but recovered his stamina very quickly in the later rounds.

-Tendency for his body to let him down - More recently this has not happended but in his earlier career there were quite a few fights where mayweather would damage his hand or more recently in the hatton fight, in the 24/7 series floyd commented on how his elbows and shoulders hurt due to his defensive style.

-Over sensitivity to feints - Now he gets away with this here because he is generally much faster than his opponent. Against Judah and Corley i believe to some extent his reflexes were overpowered by sheer speed and some flush shots were landed. He was forced to go to a more traditional guard and use more traditional techniques, being not so reliant on reflexes and speed.

-Inactivity - Some people consider this a weakness or a habit but with mayweather this really isnt one. With his accuracy he can afford to have a low work rate. Remember however that the term 'workrate' does not just include punches thrown. It also includes body movement and how many shots you must defend against. Mayweather hatton had a high work rate.

Im sure there are more things which can be added, perhaps his chin being less than ATG or not having ATG power. Discuss.

It's not that he starts slow, reasons it seems like that is that he's thinking about how much money he's making off that fight, so he is distracted for the first few rounds until something hits him.

Good stuff I agree with most of it.

He used that guard because he was against southpaws. The shoulder roll defense allows better vision to see punches coming from an orthodox stance, but since southpaw punches come from different angles that increased vision isn't as helpful. It also slows down his left hook to the head - which is typically a very effective punch against a lefty - because he's holding his left hand very low. Defensively, it leaves him wide open for a short right hook from a southpaw stance.

i suspect that uber defensiveness hides a not so uber granite chin.

HBO kept trying to pedal the story that Mayweather is gonna lose to that big strong body puncher like Castillo.

After Oscar it was a guy who can jab

Floyd is vulnerable early. Moseley got in. Judah and Hatton won some rounds. Oscar was nip tuck for the first 8.

But in all those fights he had a turning point won everyround on from the switch in gameplan

Its funny I dont think it takes a big guy like Gatti or Baldy to beat him

It takes a quick guy who doest throw alot of punches and can make adjustments

i posted this on another thread and a guy said you cant out floyd floyd and yea hes right but if you have some great attributes fight smart and just put a gameplan together with a plan a b and c you have a shot guys I think can or could have beat him but it would have been a snoozer would be somebody like Cory Spinks a quick counter guy throwsa very few punches south paw

Same goes for Manny like Floyd people always bank on that big stong guy oh Oscar than Cotto than Clottey now Margo Manny has his share a flaws and weakness but at 147 these guys are not fast and like Floyd he had his toughest fights at lower weightclasses.

My take on beating Floyd...everyone says you gotta be Castillo screw that that was at 135 a decade ago he doesnt fight liek that....however castillo had a chin to take the punches could cut off the ring got to the body and was physical. Not the greatest fighter but like i said above took his attributes and used them to the fullest. Hatton fought a similar fight but his chin didnt hold. Judah almostt won on speed and power but gassed and Floyd made the mid fight adjustment and Judah couldnt

His chin is fine, i think one of the reasons it may appear that he doesnt have a good chin its because he gets hit cleanly rarely. On the other hand, in the same token you could also argue that his chin has not been tested through constant punishment.

Good thread. If I was going to add a weakness, it would be that I believe he telegraphs his lead right hands sometimes by getting onto the tip of his right foot as he prepares to launch it.

His weaknesses as I see them:

Hands: if his hands were to go early in a fight he could be in severe trouble especially in a fight with someone like Pacquiao.

Slow starter: He is relatively slow if someone could apply some real pressure and maybe score a knock down I have thought that could force him out of his game plan. I'd also like to see how he would react to having to get up off the floor!

Overtraining: From what I have read he trains like an animal and I even get the impression he might regularly over train, he mentioned that his joints hurt etc this could mean he is prone to injuries.

Offense: Some times he is too defensive like in the fight with Marquez he seems he doesn't want to sell out even a little to get the knock out. In a close fight where he was behind and NEEDED a k.o to win could you actually go for the knock out? Like Mosely did with Mayorga for instance?

Age: How much longer can he keep performing like this especially when you consider how hard he trains, maybe one of the younger and hungrier guys can push him and find a way to win!

To be honest Im being picky he's had like one close fight and even then he was injured. But how many times did we think a particular fighter was unbeatable and THEN they get beat!

Someone might just come out just beat him stupid and we have no idea that fighter could cause him problems.

I'm not sure he has any weaknesses in skill.

Mental weakness: He's afraid to lose...

Physical weakness: I'm not sure he could take the continued punishment of an aggressive puncher with a good chin...It's why he avoided Margocheato and Pac...

I think he's weaker against southpaws than he is against right handers just because he's not as used to the angles.
