I'm (a total shite) right handed southpaw, and it's always interested me how many Pro fighters out there are like this also. Throw some names at me. The ones I've heard so far are:- Hagler Winky Wright Kessler Andy Lee Chad Dawson Cotto ODLH Sugar Ray Robinson Andy Possibly Tyson (though needs to be confirmed!!!
i think alot of boxers from the philiphins (no, not many) are like that, because when there very young they learn thai boxing before boxing and get there stance from that
That was another one I did know but forgot to mention. I'm very impressed with him. Looks like he could be the real deal to me!!!
A couple Irish on the list. Apparently lee went to the gym where his older brother was and copied the style of his older brother. He was southpaw and the rest is history. Got told that on here last night which is kind of what prompted this thread.
I understand the concept, I just don't see why anyone would do it. I couldn't see my coaches allowing it either :yep
It's jsut the natural way I stand. I think it has something to do with dominance patterns and probably your dominant leg (though I right footed). It does bring some advantages. Usually firmer jab/lead hook etc.
Im pretty sure Donaire is naturally southpaw but boxes orthodox. His last fight he started southpaw but it didnt work out at all for him
I'm no boxing coach but IMO it would make you a more balanced fighter. The stronger hand should do most of the work (okay I got that from Bruce Lee and I'm a nuthugger but still, it makes sense ). You get a nice jab, lead hook and more power in the weaker hand. If your weaker hand is leading then you're taking away even more power from it.
