I've always wondered why the claim was of 'loaded gloves' in the Dempsey v Willard bout, yet the most highest profile example of someone cheating in the ring was the Resto v Collins bout where the guy had nothing (almost literally) in his gloves.

I presume Dempseys gloves had been examined and that this example of cheating had been disproved?

true, dempsey made a dent in his sparrin partner's chest with a single left hook, cant remember the guys name but it was said when you look a his chest theres a indentation thats quite deep, thats some crazy serious punching power.

Dempsey briefly had a sparring partner called Big Ben Wray, 7 foot 2in 300 lbs Dempsey broke his jaw in three places with one hook.
    He didn't need bolts.

Great picture. Never seen that before although the guy to the left looks like hes carrying something a little more sinister than a bolt or a plaster

That is Dempsey's cheif sparring partner Big Bill Tate, in some original footage of the Willard fight, Tate can be clearly seen giving a knocked down Willard , several belts with that bat, it was these that caused the broken jaw , caved in cheekbone, and broken ribs.Jack Kearns and Tex Rickard had the offending footage removed, before the film of the fight went into public circulation.

I can't say that Kram's style is geared to be against Ali. I can say that it's geared to de-mythify Ali. Which people see as negative, but I see it as truthful. You get the Kram detractors mainly because they don't like seeing Ali sound like a human. A guy that despite his outward appearance, he was just one talented individual as human as the rest of us with a boatload of charisma that worked on some people. Guys like Kram see through that silly mystique.

No, I think it's the Willard fight.
His haircut is severe against Willard.

A bit less severe against Carpentier ...

I think you're right I've seen Dempsey in the corner prior to the Carpentier fight and he has a black cardigan on, of course he could have taken it off, but I've always been led to believe that shot was from the Willard bout

if thats true you cant blame dempsey for that, if someone in the corner cheats it cant be the fighter's fault, i've never heard this story before, where did you hear it? shouldn't tate have been arrested or sumthin? wouldn't there be riots from the cheating? the crowds were a lot more vocal in them days and more physical, cheating at that level would have stopped the fight, no? is there anyone else who saw the original footage of the dempsey-willard fight showing tate do this or is it common knowledge iv just never heard before?

    I've seen it.
The bolt in the hands story is bull****, it didn't happen. But Bill Tate did use that bat on Willard.
It's on an old copy of the footage that was exported to Australia before Kearns could alter it. Sometime in the 1960s or 70s the film was discovered and it appeared on a 1979 documentary that I have somewhere on VHS.

very interesting, this i would be really intrigued to see, wouldnt mind uploading it would you? starnge how i never heard about it before, i would have thought this owuld be huge considering peopl always see jack as a guy who cheated and did didgy dealings, his corner is apart of him, tought people would use it to slag him off...

thats a great pic also, i agree dempsey had shorter hair against wilard but the hair has been touched up on this photo, dempsey had a much higher neckline against carpenteir. in those days barbers went as high at the back as they did at the sides with the browns and sharpe hand clippers. im a barber myself i know this trust me.
