he has to rank high on p4p lists. he was consistant against so many champions over a long time and like the best at his worse always at least coped. however I always rate fighters who win their key fights by stoppage higher than those who dont on the basis that they dominated that much more clearly. trouble is I cant tell you who was beter than greb since i didnt see him. nobody has. pound for pound he was tough and could deal with anyone the record proves that much. nobody can name anyone in particular who a majority would pick to destroy a peak greb... and that says something.

as a heavyweight champion? hmm,, he was 160 and did not knock out heavyweight contenders. fitzsimmons did. Burns did. corbet did. carpenteir did. moore did.

I think greb could mess THE BEST HW champions around but i dont see him clearly dominating any linear champion over 180lb but posibly would draw and maybe SD a few like sharkey, braddock, leon spinks. As a heavyweight i see greb like tommy farr, hed make a tough fight for anyone because nobody can dominate him and he could fight hard enough to always make it close.

Tyson would be honored to stand next to Greb in any list.

What heavyweight contender (legit HW contender) did Carpentier ever KO? The closest he came was Joe Beckett and Billy Wells but those two were jokes anywhere outside of england and NOT true HW contenders.

beckett could fight there is fim of him, some posters on here mistook the film for greb himself...becket also beat an albeit faded tommy burns. gunboat smith launched himself off the back of Billy wells so wells made gunboat.

He ranks Jeffries, Fitz, Sullivan, and Langford in the top 5, H2H....
We don't even have film of him, so there's absolutely NO WAY we can rank them.... NO WAY.

You wouldnt say that he was an idiot if he gave the same ranking to Jack Dempsey, yet Harry Greb beat most of the heavyweights that Dempsey beat somtimes in more compelling fashion.

As has probably been discussed many times before folklore tells us Greb beat up Dempsey in sparring. The reality though is Greb would never have beaten Tunney at heavyweight so that automatically puts him out of the Top 20 imo. Without researching it at all I would guess Greb would be pushed to make a Top 30. Obviously P4P Harry is at the top, No.3 in my list.

Here's a website dedicated to Greb and it has quotes from a lot of newspapers from the 1920's that were following the sparring sessions betwen Greb and Dempsey.
