Where does Harry Greb rank on an all time heavyweight list?

Not top 100, but likely top 200. Greb beat some of the same heavies Dempsey did, and in most cases had an easier time.

Well Dempsey has the weakest HW resume out of all the top HWs, but he still has Sharkey, Firpo, Willard, Carpentier on his list that Greb lacks. Greb also lacks many none-LHW HWs with Miske, Brennan & Meehan topping his list, not really doing more than James Toney did at the weight

in what way did greb have an easier time? greb fought meehan over a longer distance -something dempsey would have relished against the fat boy who smothered and stalled throughout 4 rounders in willie's own hometown. dempsey Kod miske and brennan, greb did not.

 

Beckett and Wells were pure **** based both on their records and their films. Beckett beat Burns when he was coming off a substantial layoff. Smith was already well known when he defeated Wells and at that point the only reason Wells had any kind of name at all was because the Brits were so high on him. He had already been knocked out twice by the best fighters he faced. And he was actually coming off the Smith KO when he fought Carpentier only three months later. Basically the same can be said of Beckett. You tell me who either one of them beat that would elevate them to the rank of a contender for the world title. Not the British HW title, THE WORLD TITLE?

 

He had an easier time in that he dominated Meehan twice, dominated Brennan four times (while Dempsey was being outpointed by him and had his ear nearly torn off by him), knocked out Gunboat Smith easily, Dominated Tommy Gibbons in 1922 the year before Dempsey gave him a shot. The only reason Firpo and Carpentier arent on Greb's resume under the "W" category is that neither would fight him.

 

I think Holyfield should be in there somewhere.

 

in a word Porky Dan flynn. wells and beckett both beat porky dan flynn who beat a peak gunboat smith, outpointed rated contender jack renault drew with world champion battling levinsky and gave a peak sam langford, fred fulton, carl morris and kid norfolk fair compitition.
wells also Kod Gunner Moir in 3 rounds who fought burns for the world title, lasting 10 rounds.
I would say a man who beat a former world champion and another who KO'd a world title chalenger quicker than the champion would both rate as contender material.

 

I know you're joking..........Jack was living the Hollywood lifestyle by the time he fought Tunney.....silk pajamas and all that.

I would place Harry Greb somewhere in the top 100, but closer to the 90th-100th mark. Greb did beat some nice heavyweight contenders...but so did Loughran, Walker, Maxim, H Johnson...and in most cases those men beat better heavyweights did Greb did. So where do these men rate?

Ditto Frank Moran. Red Mason threw out a blunt challenge in the newspapers to Moran, basically daring him to fight Greb.

Marciano all the way down at # 19? What's up with that? Also, Holyfield at # 22 is sketchy. I have him at # 13 and I feel I underrate him.
