While Mayweather's meeting with Don King is probably much to do about nothing. It donned on me that Devon Alexander is a Don King boxer. Alexander may be the perfect opponent for Mayweather before a July date with Manny Pacuiao. If he decides to fight before than. Mayweather and Pacquiao have been trying to position themselves so they can have the fight on their terms. While Paul Williams and Sergio Martinez are the best choices for this. For Both Mayweather and Pacquiao. Alexander is a very good choice as well.
What dose Alexander bring to the Table.
    1. Two Championships at 140. No it is not 147. Arguably he is the best at the weight and there are some very good boxers at 140 right now.
    2. He's young, fast and aggressive. Pacquiao is fast and aggressive.
    3. He's a Southpaw. Pacquiao is a Southpaw
    4. He also has good stick and move skills. This is the key not pressure to beating Mayweather.
    5. Since his championship at 140 would not be on the line he would have nothing to lose.
    6. He is better than Antonio Margarito.
    7. He is only an inch shorter in height and reach than Mayweather.

Alexander coming up in weight to face Mayweather would be an advantage for Mayweather, and he should win. Also because he's the better boxer. Than again he's better than anyone in the 140-154 range. So that's not really a knock on Alexander at all. While there is no such thing as a Pacquiao clone. Alexander being fast and aggressive. As well as a southpaw. This would give Mayweather valuable experience before facing Pacquiao. Alexander's ability to stick and move could give Mayweather problems. I doubt they are enough to beat Mayweather, but Alexander can make this a very intresting match up and has a greater chance of beating Mayweather and Pacquiao, than Margarito dose of beating Pacquiao or Mayweather. This would give Mayweather the advantage at the negotiation table.
Like I said the meeting with King is most likely much to do about nothing, but if you look at this from a logical prospective Cory Spinks who's only attribute is that he's a southpaw. Makes little to no sense.
Mayweather is a lot of things including annoying and immature, but he is also incredibly smart especially when it comes to boxing. He knows how to get the advantage of opportunity inside and outside of the ring. His fight with Shane Mosley is a great example of that.
From a logical prospective. If meeting Don King was to set up a fight. Devon Alexander is the obvious choice.

I should add that despite the fact I think Alexander has a style that can beat Mayweather. I am by no means suggesting that he would beat Mayweather. Which is one of the reasons that this fight might happen. At this point neither Mayweather or Pacquiao are going to fight someone they might have difficulty beating. Yet they need someone with some name that at the very least boxing fans know. This is why Pacquiao is fighting Margarito and Mayweither might fight Alexander. It is also why Williams and Martinez are not going to be slected by either right now.

As Pacquiao/Margarito grows closer there will be more and more talk that Margarito has a chance to beat Pacquiao. If Mayweather faces Alexander. There will be more and more talk that Alexander has a chance to beat Maywather. In both cases it will just be hype. It will help sell the fights. Not that Mayweather and Pacquiao need help selling fights. As well as give the wins by Pacquiao and Mayweather an illusion of greater credibility.

Way too early for Devon. And I like Devon a lot.

The dude is a talent being developed. Mayweather is an ATG near his peak.

Uhm no. And if Mayweather takes this fight, the criticism will continue, justifiable this time.

Mayweather would be retired by the time Alexander is even ready for him. What will happen is that Alexander will be used as a sparring partner to help him prepare for manny.

Devon would at least need another top fighter (Bradley, Berto, Cotto, Khan, etc) to prove he can be in the same ring with PBF. When Urango is your best win, that is not a strong argument for PBF being your next fight.

Floyd should give Pacquiao the first priority to fight him once he's through with his "vacation".:D

if he's fighting any DKP fighter, i'm thinking it's more likely to be cory spinks, a terrible fight don has been trying to set up for a while

    It fits.
The Vacationer seeks another small opponent while the midget he ducked is going to fight another bigger opponent.

I'd love to watch Spinks vs. Mayweather. Spinks is one hell of a boxer and I'd love to see these two match wits in the ring. Mayweather Cotto would be much easier to sell.
