Paul Williams vs Dmitri Pirog

i have not seen anyone get as hyped as pirog recently.

this is ridiculous, he beat up a hype job, and all of a sudden he would kayo monzon, hopkins and hagler in one night.

jeez.

 

He had an off night.

 

Pirog clearly isnt the finished article but hes shown that he is very capable fighter by beating a highly touted prospect. In a couple of fights time when hes more refined he will be beating guys like Williams:good

 

Williams is all offensive, he's an offensive beast, he would have to pressure Pirog from the first round to the last. This isn't the middleweight bum he ko'd in the first round, Pirog is a solid, strong, very skillful middleweight. I'm not sure who to really pick at this point, Williams has the experience, but that lack of defense he was able to get away with at 147-154, he can't be doing that at middleweight.

With the exception of Martinez and Mayweather, no one else can beat Williams. At 160, I think he rocks and beats Pirog the first half of the fight, but Pirog's skill helps him from getting hurt badly. Pirog is about the same height as Williams, but Williams has a much longer reach. Williams I think might actually hit alittle harder of the 2, but his punches won't land as cleanly with all that bobbing and weaving Pirog does and he will have trouble with Pirog using angles. I like both fighters, but Williams looked real sloppy vs. Cintron and I expected an easy fight for Williams. Unless Williams stops Pirog early, I think Pirog will win a split decision on Williams.

 

I must admit i thought Cintron could have stopped Williams until he dived out of the ring.

 

This. Williams was getting stunned by Martinez punches. He'd hit the canvas when (not if) Pirog lands those bombs.

 

I like williams in this fight....pw is not jacobs...he throws more punches and i think his style could work nice against pirog...

 

I would go with Pirog, but I think P-Will has the work rate and length to keep the fight interesting. Pirog is pretty "low-output". He won't get the time to pose and set up shots like he did against Jacobs. Nor will he get a guy backing up (unless he hurts him).

Much like Mayweather or Martinez, on paper you want to give it to Pirog, but for a pure boxer P-Will is a tough stylistic matchup.

in a couple of years time fuk knows what will happen to a man who is known for beating an undefeated prospect.

who will he fight next? sturm, sylvester, maklin, barker? because in my opinion all of them should be favoured above him if it is to be his next fight.

he might well end up good, but 1 fight means nothing.

look at pavlik, he twatted undefeated middleweight king taylor and people thought he was the next dominant force. he then went on to get schooled by two people who where adept with footwork and movement.

had jacobs not left his left jab lingering in nomans land, he would have continued to outbox pirog imo.

now one punch does not make a guy a world class fighter and this hype is stupid.

 

:? No way was Jacobs ever outboxing Pirog. You make it sound as if it wasn't for the ko punch Jacobs might of won the fight fighting the way he was. What was equally impressive about Pirog was the way he was outboxing Jacobs before the ko happened. Jacobs switched stances and would throw 4-5 jabs and would miss them all because of the bobbing weaving Pirog was doing. Just because Jacobs was the slicker of the 2 doesn't mean he's a better boxer. It was great in a way the ko did happen because if not, there was the danger of Jacobs getting a hometown decision which happens often.

 

i had jacobs winning every round apart from 2 and 5.

i was well shocked when pirog landed that punch cos i9t came out of nowhere.

now i not saying it is not a credible victory. but it dont mean he can hang with williams. a lot of better boxers than pirog have lost to williams.

 

I wouldn't say ALOT of better boxers than pirog have lost to williams. don't get me wrong, I like Williams how he presents himself as an old school fighter, but if you mean to tell me Martinez, Quintana, past his prime Winky, and Phillips at this point would beat Pirog, with the exception of Martinez, I think Pirog can upset anyone of them. And the Martinez win is a very debatable one. Like Martinez before him, he doesn't have the accomplishments a legend like Winky has, but Winky today is not the Winky that beat Mosley or Trinidad. Win or lose, I think Pirog will still make a good account of himself vs. Williams. If Williams had defense Pirog had, it would be a different story, but Williams is very hittable he hasn't changed and for the first time would be in the ring with someone eye to eye and is not one dimensional like a Kelly Pavlik who has power. Pirog has skill and he has power. IMO

 

again you base this all on one fight against an undefeated prospect. keep it real man

How many people thought Martinez was ready for Williams after Bunema and Cintron? Lots were making jokes about him only fighting Argentinian Firefighters and Cab drivers. He may not have had a great deal of experience against top 10 MW's but his skills are present and he proved it.

So Pirog can take Jantuah's punch no problem but Williams KO's him.....that is real rational.

Quintana is 5'9 147lbs keep that in mind.

Who has Williams even hurt at 154?

He averaged 95 ppr vs Jantuah and 101 ppr vs Melis according to the compubox. Not exactly low output. Typically he wears his opponents down through accumilation.
