Floyd began lower also. Marquez was never the fighter Floyd or Pacman could be. he is a level below them.

Tell me, how much credit would Oscar have gotten for beating Pac?

Even though Oscar agreed to come down a few pounds and made weight, he would have gotten very little credit for beating a little guy like Pac who went up two divisions and had never beaten anyone above 135. And Pac was P4P #1.

Only if Pac had still gone on to destroy Hatton and Cotto at 140-147 would DLH win been elevated to a good win.

That's the consequence of fighting a little guy unproven in your weight class. It's always a lose-lose situation. It's nothing against Mayweather, it's just how it is.

Mayweather knew this, and he knew the embarrassment it would cause to his legacy if he somehow lost. That is why he didn't honor the catchweight and lose those 2 lbs at the weigh in to ensure he wasn't giving anything away to Marquez. What makes it worse is he had every conceivable advantage yet still did this.

It's a meaningless win unless Marquez goes on a Pac-like rampage through 140-147.

you cannot mention age as something which has to do with a worn out boxer- James Kinchen in 1988 gave Tommy a tough fight and still lost, and yet Tommy was the one who was known to be more worn out. No one will ever really think Marquez is as good as Barrera in the history of boxing.

JMM is not elite. Not in my mind. The John fight and the Mayweather fights are there. He fought Pacman and Barrera at the right time. Pacman is elite. Barrera is elite. They beat top fighters in dominant fashion.

I can't mention age when you bring up that Barrera was old as a detraction and both fighters were the same age? Well, I can and did. It's relevant. He beat Barrera when Barrera was the champion, who hadn't lost in over three years and was defending his title for the fifth time, on a six-fight winning streak. Then he fought well against Marquez. Was he worn out? Many people rate Marquez and Barrera similarly, so claiming no one ever will is just false.

Also noteworthy, Barrera fought Pacquiao twice and took a UD loss and a knockout loss. Marquez fought Pacquiao twice and got a draw and an SD loss, and in both fights the decision could've gone either which way, very reasonably. Granted, reason is not the specialty of someone who thinks Pacquiao is too good for a guy he fought in two razor thin ring classics with, but try and grasp it. Marquez is a three-division world champion who has officially beaten eleven world champions. In his third championship weight class, he is the linear champion past age 35. He has only one clear loss after facing Barrera, Pacquiao twice and Floyd Mayweather at an enormous disadvantage. Of course he is an elite fighter, which is the point, not a comparison between he and Barrera. And he was marketed rather poorly, by the way, as has been pointed out to you already.

depends how you class elite really, he has done really well in the divisions he has fought in, except 147. he is an A-level fighter, but i dont think he is elite. one thing is for sure, he is not good enough to follow floyd and pacman into the higher divisions and remain competitive.

for thos who think jmm vs pac at 140 is a good idea, we saw how bloated jmm looked at 142, he would get slaughtered.

You know you can be elite without moving up numerous weight classes? Just because he is not at his best at 140, and 147lbs...that doesn't make him not elite...:huh

well what i mean is, the likes of floyd, duran, mosley, pacman, odlh etc... have all been able to compete in higher weight classes after starting out in lower weight classes. marquez is not good enough to follow in their footsteps.

he is definitely HOF worthy, but not on the same level as those listed, IMO.

The boxers you mentioned have mostly grown out of weight classes and been forced to move up...in some cases, they have moved up to challenge themselves.

But just because Marquez can't go and win titles in a fourth (he still could), or fifth weight class...that doesn't make him any less elite.

And Mosley is only a 3 weight world champion...the same as Marquez.

in his own right being small is something he cant control, but the fact is he is too small for them weights. at 140 id favour him above khan but not above pacman.

it wont make his career any less impressive but in the scal of things today, he is clearly below floyd and pacman and should not be fighting them.
