Any boxing particulars about Darby, S, e.g. where he won the Gloves, the weight class 'n if it was novice or open class?
Many years ago Carmine Fatta called me up and said that he ran into a friend of mine, Freddie Red Cochrane. I told him that Freddie died several years ago. Several days later I got a phone call from 2 boxing people from New York, stating the same thing. I told them that I went to the funeral, and Freddie is dead. The 2 guys came over my house with pictures of Freddie and I showed them the pictures I had. Then we both showed each other pictures of an older Freddie and they were not the same. One of the pictures had those 2 with Freddie so I asked them how tall they were. They said, they were both around 5'10". I said, it looks like Freddie is taller than both of you. They said, yes he was. I then showed them the record book saying that Freddie was much smaller. They said that was a mistake. I then told them that there was a Veteran Boxers dinner next Sunday, and I would like to invite both of them, with their wives plus Freddie and his. I even told them that they could invited 2 other couples, as long as Freddie comes. I told them that a lot of Freddie's friends will be their and they will be amazed to see him again. They both agreed. Saturday night I got a phone call saying that Freddie was very sick and couldn't make it, so they never came. Several years later, the Ring Magazine had an article that this Freddie Red Cochrane passed away and the articles wasn't a very good one on his life. I made a few phone calls and to make a long story short, the family of Freddie sued Ring. The guy's name was actually Jimmy Smith and they said he changed his name to Freddie Red Cochrane when he started boxing. Several years later I went up to a new boxing gym in Vernon, New Jersey, and they had a lot of pictures all over the walls. I looked at one of them over one of the doors, and it was signed Freddie Red Cochrane, with his picture, BUT it was actually Jimmy Smith. I then showed some of the people I went there with and we all had a good laugh. Even after he (Jimmy Smith) was dead, they were still saying that he was Freddie.
Congratulations! I LOVE making people happy! I don't know about Bukkake, But I don't get up that early!
JG, forgive my ignorance but what was the story on Satterfield? A brief outline if you would indulge me please. Thanx for the congrats HH and Bukkake. i feel like halle berry winning an oscar over Streep and Bette Davis
Interesting tale hh...I have one also... In about 1958-59, my father who was retired ,would play cards with his cronies at the pier...A short while before he phoned me and said that the old Champ Lou Ambers, was in on a game of cards, and I should come over, and keep mum..I did go to the pier and sure enough this elderly looking man was Lou Ambers, playing cards with the other retirees..I got a great thrill seeing this old time great fighter... Well about one year later, my dad called me on the phone and said,"you wouldn't believe this, but the old time legend JOE GRIM.is here at the pier" I was shocked to think that Joe Grim, the HUMAN PUNCHING BAG was still alive,in his late sixties or seventies..Who fought Fitzimmons, Johnson, etc soaking up all their punishment, and still on his feet, weighing 150 or so pounds ! I rushed to the pier anxious to see this legend, but he left a few minutes before I arrived..My dad and others said he looked like an old fighter with a bashed in face...I was so disappointed and went home.. Later on I dicovered that the original Joe Grim died many ytears later in an asylum from brain damage...Yes there are a lot of charlatans posing as old time great fighters, even to this day...b.b.
Darby's been mentioned here as a GG winner several times, FM, but nobody's mentioned where, the weight class, or if it was novice or open. Could this just be one more PR factoid swallowed as truth?
i could swear i read it years ago in the sunday tabloids that it was fabricated by his management, saying he was a boxing champ and in the army and stuff, just to give him a bit of 'edge', when in fact he had a pretty decent middle-class background without the above
