That is the question.... Freddie Roach says yes Johnny Eames says no Billy Nelson says no Howard Rainey says yes What say you? And Why? I say yes.... Its the only way to take the weight correctly over to the right side of the body.
Without pivoting you can't put your hips into the hook. I know if I don't pivot I get nowhere near the same amount of power compared to when I do pivot. So I'd say yes.
now a question from me: The Right Uppercut to the head (orthodox stance) - To pivot or not to pivot (with the back foot) ??? i say...yes...and remeber i pivot with the back foot and still have most of my weight on the back foot
Yes, my reason being the same... easiest and most comfortable way to transfer over your weight and having more power with the hook
Without a pivot i feel i cant get any real power, also i think its slower. sometimes when connecting with a left without pivoting if the bag or person is traveling directly into the shot i feel it knocks me back a bit and off balance just a tad, i cant really think of an advantage to not pivoting, it wouldnt really improve mobility. I know ive used a left hook to the body or head without a pivot and with a small step to the left to set up a better angle and opening for a real left hook for the head or the liver behind the elbow, but its more of a fake/trick punch just to get their gloves or elbows where you want them.
What a stupid question. Of course you should pivot. Try throwing a left hook without moving your foot you are left well out of balance and gain nothing in power. Only time I would use it is on the inside for short left hooks to the body. How can anyone throw a left hook without pivoting with both feet? You need to change gyms mate you are getting taught it all wrong . HTH
I pivot on both more so the right obviously and leaves most of my weight on the left front to bang that left hook in because you rise up with it.
