I don't know that he adjusted or Guerrero let him adjust. That fight could have ended early, his reflexes don't look good and his chin is shot.
I disagree. In hindsight, yes. But he looked decent in that fight, it was even, or close to even, going into the championship rounds. Right before he got KO'd... ok... so he looked past his best, but he was still very competitive against arguably the best fighter in the world at the time. There were not enough negatives in that fight to prompt him to retire. What I fear now is, he'll fight on, and get beat up and hurt for shitty pay by guys who weren't fit to lace his boots in the middle part of the last decade.
Yes he look good vs marquez that's why it was the best time to retire. Now he'll be losing to some unknown boxers who's trying to make a name for themselves. It would have been better to say i loss my last fight against a great fighter like marquez than to some bum he'll be losing too now if he keeps on fighting.
i think it was a mixture of both, i say this because his legs and movement appeared to improve as the fight went on, yet at the same time it appeared as if guererro eased up a little...but it was clear that he was bothering guererro in there
Oh yeah, if the retirement is going to come after taking a beating from bums, which looks likely somewhere down the line, then the JMM fight would have been MUCH better time to retire. But was post-JMM better than now - against Guerrero? I mean, he looked ok, had a good last few rounds and was laughing and smiling at the end. Going the distance against Guerrero was a marginally better moment to retire then being KO'd by Marquez.
There was very little genuine, sustained aggression in the fight. I don't know if this was because Guerrero couldn't finish, or jhe ust choose to carry him. But I didn't see Joel make any adjustments, it was just Guererro taking his foot of the gas. Every time he got pressured with combinations, Joel looked likely to go.
He should of retire after squeaking past Santa Cruz, he was damn lucky to have 'won' that fight (and that was 2-3 years ago).
anyone else catch that Lampley comment after the Guerrero got KD. "And that knockdown will be enough for Casamayor to say hes still as good as ever and demand another big fight."
