Fowler to set record straight Jay Buchan - Queensland Times - 2nd August 2010 PARTLY driven by the need to make amends for his last fight, Ipswich sporting all-rounder Anthony Fowler makes his return to the boxing ring later this month. This content is protected “I’ve always thought about it and the time was right,” Fowler said of his decision to get back in the ring aged 36. “(Fight promoter) Jamie Myer spoke to me. “We go to all the fight nights and it is always fun watching others get hit.” Fowler’s only previous boxing match was his infamous first-round loss to John Hopoate in 2006. He admitted going out on a better note than that was part of his motivation for coming back for another crack at the sport, along with getting into shape. “It is a bit,” Fowler said. “It was also a way for me to get fit. “I’m not the most energetic and motivated to get fit and with two young kids, it is a struggle.” Having something to train for has seen Fowler getting up at 4am and training twice a day for the past month. That includes sparring, gym work, cycling and technical work. “It’s real hard,” he said. “They didn’t ease up once. “I’m in at the deep end.” Fowler is being trained by Australian Institute of Sport coach Gareth Williams and former national champion Emmanuel Otti and tips the scales at 116kg at this stage. He lost 5kg in his first week of training but has since plateaued, with muscle mass no doubt replacing his middle age spread. Fowler is appreciating the results of his hard work. “It feels great,” he said. “It is hard work getting up at 4am but feels heaps better at the end of it.” He is unsure if it will be his last fight, with the result being a deciding factor. “If I get dusted up, it will definitely be a one-off,” he said. “If I win, I’d like to have another crack. I’ll talk to my wife and kids about it.” The fight is over four two-minute rounds and Fowler is yet to devise a strategy. “I don’t know yet,” he said. “I’ll wait and see how things are.” Fowler is confident there will be no repeat of the Hopoate fight. “I haven’t got a broken hand this time, which will help,” he said. “Not that it would have stopped what happened (against Hopoate). “I’m probably fitter this time and have done more technical work.”
Looking forward to seeing my mate Chooky lace em up again. Former North Sydney Bear and Seagull. He used to post here a bit too.
the last day is the most important, if hes looking better each time come fight night he should be able to peak, wonder what his weight is sitting at now with the added sparring maybe he has dropped a couple kg's? btw ash jwp absolute legend as tough as they come
His weight has come down with the sparring and we hope next 2 days are huge for Alex and he can get 18 rounds in. yeah JWP is great mate...hes fighting the preacher in 6 weeks...again
Good to see an open book approach with Alex. Best way to get people behind a sportsman is to make them accessible to the public, and keep the pubic informed (even if his unofficial publisist is Ash...LOL).
