Who's More Intimidating? Monzon or Duran?

I absolutely second this recommendation, and everybody else on ESB who has read a copy of Fried's excellent publication has also raved about it, so far as I am aware.

When reading "Corner Men," check out the substantial footage available on-line of any bouts discussed by the various legends Fried profiles, for furthering knowledge of boxing.

 

What bouts are included mate.

 

I'd need to pull my copy out of storage to identify precisely which matches discussed are available on-line, but Futch discussed the strategy he intended Norton to implement for Ali, and how he and Frazier plotted to throw Jerry Quarry off with right hands in their rematch. (Of course I realize you have footage which may not be on the internet, and would take that into account when composing a reply with my edition of Freid's book in hand.)

Jack Blackburn detailed how Louis approached his rematch with Godoy, while Arcel described the shrewd ploy he had Peppermint Frazer begin his successful challenge of Nicholino Locche with.

Later on JT, I'll dig it out of my archives, and review it for you in further detail (unless somebody who has it more readily on hand chooses to do so first).

There is a great deal about Joe Louis in it, as Manny Seamon receives a profile along with Blackburn. As Freddie Brown is profiled along with Arcel, Duran gets some coverage. Chapters on Whitey Bimstein and Charley Goldman offer a glimpse into the atmosphere of Stillman's Gym when that was the center of the boxing universe. Coverage of Goldman obviously means discussing Marciano.

Eddie Futch came across as the most impressive subject to me. But while the right handed strategy he and Frazier planned for the Quarry rematch was obvious to everybody viewing it live, the plot Eddie diagrammed for Norton against Ali is not so apparent when watching footage of their bouts. Nonetheless, Futch comes across as a highly articulate and intelligent gentleman.

That snippet sure does prove one thing. Black trunks do nothing to help Ray Leonard look intimidating.

Duran was more exuberant and outgoing. Monzon was surly and often arrogant and unapproachable. The two premier fighters of the 70's along with Ali. I will say it is a tie.

Monzon wasn't particularly intimidating, apart from maybe for his wives. He had a very cautious style. Duran was an animal, and was known for being an animal.

 

Man, if you're not intimidated by this man, I don't know what will intimidate you. Look at his deadly cold stare...Like he's burning holes right through you with all his eyes...spooky.

Duran gets my vote.

 

I'd rather drink it up with Duran outside the ring then Monzon who would probably try to chuck me off his balcony.

 

:nono Wrong dude Hagler was intimidated by Duran. Hagler was naturally bigger the reigning Mw king and he fought kind of tame and he was still losing the fight, that should have made him turn it on and take the fight to Duran but he didnt. And sorry i though Duran almost pulled it out, I thought Hagler needed those last rounds to get the nod and he did after Duran just about ran out of Gas.

Duran more intimidating than Monzon by faaaaaaaar!!
