Hide had beaten Bentt who starched Morrison, Tommy lost his title to Bentt who was beaten easily by Hide. Mercer had lost to Ferguson, thus blowing his shot at a title shot againt Bowe. He was chosen to face Bowe after Dokes. Like Unforgiven said, in retrospect, you can pick apart Bowes comp, but at the time, a lot the fighters that went on to fairly respectable careers, were not that good at the time, and had their shot to prove it, and failed, just like your post. :nut
Everyone knows Bent fluked it, Morrison would add Foreman and Rudduck to his ledger, Hide would get starched in 2 by Chimchangu and the breeze from Vitali's punch. Mercer was in **** poor form against Ferguson, could Ferguson run Holyfield and Lennox close? Ofcourse not Bowe feasted on bums Holyfield aside, Lennox fought the best, there's the difference
No, everyone knows Morrison chin was ****. It was no fluke So what, that didnt make Morrison's chin any better or make him a better fighter. And Holmes too right. Is that a worthy excuse knowing your next fight is going to be for two world titles? Why not? He was a respectable fighter when he wanted to be. He had beaten James Douglas and fought Mcall close who knocked out Lewis. Yeah all the bums that actually beat the fighters you think he should have fought!
Uhhh... the first Golota fight was just after the 3rd Holyfield fight. You can't have it both ways on this.
Bowe would stop Lewis in eighth rounds, Lewis would give him some problems, but Bowe doing his dirty on the inside, gets it done.
in 1993 and Bowe in shape I say Bowe because Bowe was a little ahead of Lewis at the time, but prime for prime Lewis in mid rounds. Fact is Bowe's best punch was his left hook, and Lewis his right as we know. Right vs. Left usually the right hand wins with guys this big and in equal quickness, and Lewis was quick. He would stop Bowe.
My point is that when two fighter enter the ring they both enter with a particular strategy they want to use to in order to win. Essentially Bowe's only change of winning would be to turn the fight into a trench warfare, cause like you said, Bowe isn't boxing guys from the outside. Lewis was always pretty good at using his size but when he was younger he would be more inclinded to simply overpower his opponent with his power. Certainly were they to fight, this would be his likely strategy. So with each fighter having their own strategy only one of likely to succeed and I believe that Lewis would have a higher probability of being successful than Bowe. As Lewis aged, he also became a master of ring generalship in the sense he could often dicate where a fight was going to take place. Wlad for all his faults is also a master at using his size and power to determine where a fight is going to take place, which is usually far enough way that he can hit, without fear of being hit.
Not really. Morrison had been knocked down twice by an over-the-hill Carl Williams, who was never known as a punches. He'd also gone life and death with Joe Hipp, and of course he'd been obliterated by a few solid punches from Mercer (again, not really known as a KO puncher). A few fights after Bentt, Morrison went down twice against Ross Purrity. Morrison has become perhaps the most overrated of all the 90s heavyweights. Well, Mercer and Ferguson actually fought a rematch after Bowe had destroyed Jesse. Of course, Mercer had all the motivation to set the record straight, and he came in fit (15 pounds lighter than first time). The result ? Mercer won a very close split decision. He certainly never proved superiority over Ferguson.
Lennox would brutally knock Bowe out in an extreme mismatch. I don't think Bowe would last past 2-3 rounds. Lewis knew Bowe was mentally inferior and psychologically scared, he would assault Bowe early. I don't think Bowe would land any meaningful punch as he was scarred by the amateur loss.
even in 93' you could never rely on bowe. by then lewis was knocking out unbeaten mason, highly regarded rudock and decking a still good tucker, prety much all he was asked to do. . Bowe edged holyfeild, beat a washed up dokes, did not beat tubbs and lumbered against coetzer.
And then he went on to struggle with Frank Bruno and get knocked out by Mcall, you forgot that part. Bowe didnt lumber against Coetzer. He fought Tubbs about 8 or 9 fight before he even faced Holyfield for the title and didnt lose!
Whatever you think, it was proven Lewis wasnt ready for a fighter of Bowe's caliber in 93. Thats why Emanuel Steward picked Ray Mercer after he had him for a couple of fights. He knew Ray wasnt a big puncher, but he had a good chin, and he would take Lewis out of his comfort zone. Lewis was forced to fight in a way he wasnt very comfortable at, or good at, and thats why the fight was so close. Bowe was a step above Mercer, both in power size and technique. Lewis was a determined fighter with a big heart and he willed his way through that fight, but at that time, I just dont see him being able to do that to Bowe. Sure he can hit Bowe, but Bowe's chin is vastly underated as is his heart come fight night.
Bowe looked like **** against Coetzer, got frustrated because little Pierre wouldn't go along with the script and lay down, split his trunks so we had to see his ass all night, and finally resorted to low blows to put away the limited Boer. It was a pretty underwhelming performance. The thing about Bruno and McCall- both very dangerous- is that Bowe never got close getting into a ring with either.
Why was Mcall dangerous, because he landed a righthand on Lewis with his eyes close? Mcall was mediocre at best, he just was able to expose an unpolished, inexperienced pro at the time.
Bowe looked like **** against Coetzer? He won every round. Coetzer was tough and had never been stopped. Bowe beat the crap out of him.
