I made a typo. That last sentence was all ****ed up. I meant to say, "It sounds like people have been running off at the mouth without the bosses' knowledge."
I wonder what the "right money" is in Pavlik's estimation, he didn't seem to understand how much his stock dropped after the Hopkins loss, and this might be a problem now that he lost the Championship as well. Let's face it, any demand even close to 7 figures is unrealistic at this point, it might take 2 or 3 impressive wins to earn that kind of reward. But that means 2 or 3 high risk realtively low reward fights to take like Pirog, that's the only way back to the top, that or a payday vs. Lucian Bute which might be his last. Pavlik should rather start rebuilding his career opening with a change in the corner and deal with his wallet later, that's the smart order.
Chavez Jr. would have been 7 figures. Not in a guarantee but I think the fight would have sold well enough.
i worry that arum heard "recognizable mexican fighter" and "cowboy stadium" in the same breath and his radar went up. kelly being able to make 160 seems to play second fiddle to arum. and according to dunkin, now arum has "nothing for them" now that roach said hell no in regards to putting jcc jr in there w/ kelly arum cares about getting a well known mexican fighter in that staduim above all else. if margo get's his california license after his Aug 18th hearing, the fight w/ pac is reportedly heading there. that what is what was reported on the scene. arum has a one track mind right now.
That fight never was realistic, a nice Top Rank Only idea with a lot of money, but no one was that stupid in the Chavez camp to get KTFO at 160lbs for a paycheck when he just started to look good with a future at 154. One way or another, Pavlik has to accept that in order to get the money of the old days, he must go though high risk fights with economic sacrifices, but like I said, that shouldn't be his main focus, putting his career back on track should, and that starts in the gym.
It will be interesting to see what happens in California. I THINK they only found him guilty of being the captain of his team and laid no real direct guilt on him personally for the hand wrap situation. They found him guilty of hiring his trainer basically and he fired that trainer. What grounds do they use now to deny him a license?
He still has name recognition. That is why Pirog wants him. I don't think his stock has fallen as far as you seem to think. Arum builds a 'product'. I could be wrong. I think he still will get a half mill for his next fight at minimum, not the $100K Bute's team thought they could get him for as an under card fight for FNF. Time will tell. A one sided loss could make the $100K look pretty damned good though.....
$500k is about right and realistic, even 1-200k more depending what the opponent and the fight brings in (Pirog, not much, Williams, a lot more), but is $500k the "right money" Pavlik is looking for vs. a riskly opponent such as Dmitry? I have a feeling that he's looking for a lot more, and I'm afraid that will kill the fight before serious negotiations could begin. Pavlik-Pirog is an excellent fight and there's much to gain for both (Pirog: name recognition, Pavlik: WBO title), so let's make it!
and more to the point...does california and texas have some sort of reciprocity? all the article said was if he gets his California license, then the fight is headed to Texas. some posters on a here have said the new CSAC head is a former fighter himself w/o much sympathy for margarito...so we will see. it would seem arum like his chance there though. they withdrew their application for a provisional one fight license in vegas and are putting their eggs in the CSAC basket. but i agree herm, it will be very inneresting
if i'm not mistaken, i think kelly has some guarantees in his top rank deal as far as purses are concerned...could be wrong. i try not to get into specifics about fighters and their deals... having said that, if he gets on track the money will be there so at 28 he can still invest in his future...and by future i mean big time money fights...by putting together a string of solid performances over live opponents. pirog would fit the bill of investing in his future if he can safely make 160...which even kelly isnt sure he can do.
Kelly's guarantee is $600K. That's right in line with what you are talking about. However, the Chavez fight would have come out at 7 figures I'm sure: A really nice pay day with little risk. I think that is why KP was willing to entertain the idea. Pirog's Russian presser is on B.S. Pirog said he will fight KP at a catch weight. Pavlik/Pirog at 165:nono Pirog gets his ass kicked by a veteran many people think is shot, but keeps his middleweight title. Sound familiar?
