Is there another sport where a consensus of experts thinks the players 50 years ago..

Is there another sport where a sizable minority to majority of experts thinks the players / athletes 50 years ago where better than what they are today?

If so, can somebody name one besides boxing.

 

Boxing truly is one of a kind.

 

Russian midget bowling. The greats are all the old ones.

 

Perhaps Baseball

We hear more of Babe, Mayes and Williams than any one else about.

This propostion's something I've tried to skirt in my own mind, M (a wuss about my heroes) -- 'n don't confuse me with facts! Know time 'n tide waits for no man, 'n athletes are bigger, faster and stronger on land 'n the water, but I don't have to like it.

No rabid baseball fan wanted to see the Babe's HR mark eclipsed. But the world didn't come to an end, 'n fighters will continue to get better-- no argument -- but I draw the line at any fighter ever being be better than SRR...then the world will come to an end.

 

SSR will be eclipsed as a fighter. Just probably not in our lifetimes.

So you are saying they were better back then compared to today or they could compete with today's players...or just how some writers still boost up the past greats from their childhood?

 

Make no apologies, C, this writer still clings tenaciously to my boyhood heroes: SRR, Louis 'n Pep.

 

I think one reason boxers of yesteryear can reasonably be considered just as good, if not better, than boxers today, is because boxers have always been ridiculous with their training. I mean the human body can only get so good.

Compare this to other sports...look at hockey, NHL players in the 70s drank beer every night. One of the best players of the 70s, Guy Lafleur, smoked between periods FFS. No wonder team sports like that have evolved so much since then, if thats what was going on.

 

I'm in the minority among people in my age bracket, but I have a hard time rating anyone firmly ahead of Russell - certainly not today's top talents, and not even Jordan really.

 

I reckon Jim Figg would still go alright with a cudgel

 

Many of the awesome and legendary plays of the past. Are routinely done today:yep

 

:think What city are you from?..... Na but seriously i do have Russell in my top 5 but that has alot to do with ranking him in the era he played in. Russell would still be awesome today but not as dominant as he was.
