By Jim Dower: 45-year-old former middleweight and light heavyweight champion Bernard Hopkins (51-5-1, 32 KOs) is interested in moving up in weight and challenging World Boxing Association heavyweight champion David Haye (24-1, 22 KOs) for his WBA title. Hopkins hasnt been very active in the past couple of years since easily beating Kelly Pavlik by a one-sided 12 round unanimous decision in October 2008. clinching. Thoughts??? G
Im not entirely sure why Hop is still flirting with boxing. He obviously loves the game but unless the big fights are getting made i dont see the point in him hanging around. Not since Pavlik has he been in a meaningful fight and that was 2 years ago. Right now 75 is a bit of wasteland. Unless he's willing to move up just retire already.
there was an article on here recently where Hopkins stated that if he was caught by Haye then he was going down. If rumours are true that he collapsed after the Jones fight then this fight is suicide.
Its on the front page if you scroll down. Its an interview but Hops gives a lot of long and detailed answers.
I read it in the July Ring magazine bud. page 122-123 "The Fight Doctor" That is a direct quote from the magazine by Margaret Goodman who was having a go at the NSAC. Her article also includeed statements and her concerns surrounding the Guzman-Funeka, Dirrell-Abraham and Holyfield-Botha fights.
