Before the Gavilan fight yes, after no! If we can turn back the clock to 1952, I believe he would. That year Davey, who was a southpaw, beat IKe Williams, Chico Vejar twice, Carmen Basilio, Rocky Graziano and Fitzie Purden. That's 3 Hall of Famers and 2 other outstanding fighters.
With that kind of a resume, h, why would the lone Gavilan loss -- no matter how one-sided -- have turned it all so sour for Davey. There's a long list of guys who've suffered something comparable 'n comeback to do great things.
I sure do believe Chuck Davey would be a top contender today...As hh poisted Davey licked a slew of top welterweights as Basilio,Graziano, Fritzie Pruden from Canada, Chico Vejar, Ike Williams, etc..Davey was riding on top of the world until he faced Kid Gavilan, who just had his number, and tkod Davey..He lost all his confidence after Gavilan kod him and shortly retired...As I have posted before ,there was a fighter called Billy Arnold, from Philly in the 1940s who kod about 43,out of 45 bouts, and was touted as the new Joe Louis..He fought an underdog named Rocky Graziano in 1945, got flattened and went downhill after that one fight..Lost confidence just like Chuck Davey...It happens...
I think his confidence was destroyed. I think after beating the other guys, he thought he was unbeatable. So after losing to the Kid, that was gone. Everyone takes losses differently.
Well, straight off the bat I think he beats Cotto, Williams, Margarito and an old (and probably even a peak) Mosley.
...no way.....he became a star by his appearances on television...without that build up available now he wouldn't even be a contender. two of his wins on tv were hugely suspect, and graziano had the handcuffs on in their fight.
Sure, but he wasn't a particularly talented fighter imo.Thing is there haven't been any much better natural welters for a while now.
He was alright, a solid boxer who made the most of what he had. Reckon he probably picks up a title or two today but falls short at the elite level, but is a solid champion.
