Butterbean was born Eric Scott Esch.

Butterbean faced former WBC & IBF World champion 52 year old Larry Holmes in 2002, and while Holmes won a unanimous 10-round decision, Butterbean was credited with a controversial knockdown in the final round.

This was one of only three fights in a 109 fight career that was scheduled for more than 4 rounds.

This thread's gone to the dogs today I'm afraid. First Butterbean, and now this:

What's Evander Holyfield been up to you might ask:

....not sure I'd be chewing on those ears when we all know who's been there before.

David Reid, in the light middleweight division, is the only American boxer to win a gold medal at the Olympic Games in Atlanta, coming from behind to knock out Cuba’s Alfredo Duvergel in round 3.

Reid would go on to win the WBA world light middleweight title from Frenchman Laurent Boudouani in 1999.

His first title defence was against our own Kevn ‘Bones’ Kelly, also in 1999, and although the record books show a UD victory to Reid, Kelly fought a great fight.

Here's an oldie but goody. In fact it's not even listed in BoxRec, perhaps because it was a bare knuckles bout.

    John L. Sullivan
v Jake Kilrain - Richburg, Mississippi, USA.

Sullivan retains the World heavyweight (bare knuckle) title by KO in round 75 of 80. This bout was contested under the London Prize Ring rules (bare knuckles etc).

Depending on who you listen to, Sullivan became world heavyweight champion in 1888 when he defeated Charley Mitchell in France, or the following year when he knocked out Kilrain, as above.

The Kilrain fight is considered to be a turning point in boxing history because it was the last world title bout fought under the London Rules and also, the last bare-knuckle heavyweight title bout.

Undefeated at that point, Sullivan did not defend his title for the next three years, instead fighting only exhibitions.

Sullivan finally agreed to defend his title in 1892. This time in a gloved battle, and lost to Gentleman Jim Corbett in 21 rounds.

Awesome that you're quoting a work of fiction that, as usual, has no connection with anything being discussed on here. In case you hadn't noticed, this is about what happened on this day in history, not some imaginations from a fictional account of the life of Ned Kelly. You're like a black hole of stupidity, a vacuum sucking the sense out of anything nearby.

Just too good a segway not to mention that it's been a month since a certain French photographer, who maintained he was going to school us all at ESB, tucked his tail between his legs and disappeared.

ESB vs 20a87 at East Side Boxing Forum.

After repeated arrogant boasts of dominance over all at ESB who'd listen, the the limp-wristed Frenchman's run was abruptly halted by a decisive and devastating KO. Yes, the truth was out, and the jig was up for our serial-liar friend, and even he appears to have accepted the reality of it.

Boasts of Anthony Mundine unifying world titles etc are now up to others.
