Robinsons style

Ivan Robinson was rather slick and good defensively but lacked a lot of pop. Nothing truly special for the top echelon of the sport but worth respect as a solid practitioner.

I don't like the way Robinson fought in the mid to late fifties. Nothing dramatically different, but as with most fighters, the flow and vitality disintegrates over time. In the earliest films we have, the punches just roll off Robinson's shoulders and his legs look like they could carry him for thirty rounds.

He wasn't an original though. His nearest prototypes, I would say, were Kid Chocolate and Panama Al Brown. Lean sharp shooters with flair who were on the 'mover' side of the term 'boxer-puncher', in contrast to the more grounded styles of Ike Williams and Joe Louis.

 

He had all of the above, and more !

yup,my favourite fight of him is against lamotta, the way he fights moves is just so fluid and he does it with great balnce and speed in round 2 he tries to ko jake and pummels him with sharp punches but hes not ever off balance and they just seem to hit jake so easily.


i would love to see him in his prime, i actually found a guy on another forum who said he had about 15 mins of good camera work film of robbie against bernie docusen. he said he got it from bernie's family. i though it it may be the youtube vid uploaded last year, but he said 1) that it was 15 or more mins of the fight, the youtube one is only ten minutes. and 2) that it was good camera work, we all know the on youtube is not the best, you can hardly see anything in that film. i was gunna contact him to ask him if its the same fight hes got as the one on youtube but i cant seem to register on the forum for some reason .

anyway sorry to ramble on but the point was, yeah robinson was great to watch especially in the lamotta fight and it would be awesome to see him in his prime...

 

Two points ---
I have cseen Ray Robinson in his welterweight prime, and he was awesome...
Bernard Docusen would be the welterweight champion today...No doubt...

i think in the same thread in that other forum i was talking about, is was revelaed that towards the end of his life when Cayton was in the process of selling his collection to Disney, someone approached him with a film of the full 15 rounds of bernie and Sugar, cayton declined to buy it... what a crying shame, i think he passed cuz he was selling the collection, hes not gunna buy something just to get rid of it again. i really wish he bought it though.:|

Speed to the three minute mark, the slow motion part. Don't you just see a young Ray Robinson? Look at the pivot on the hook and the lightness of the feet. Like I said, the prototype, along with Kid Chocolate.

 

Damn, Kid Chocalate looks great..To think that Tony Canzoneri kod Kid Chocalate in 2 rds in 1933, speaks to how great a fighter Tony Canzoneri was !!

 

That's Al Brown in the video mate, but it's easy to confuse the two. Similar style, rangy and classy. I love it.

 

yup, but not the greatest of quality, greatest boxer ever in the ring and we dont have proper film of it... only decent footage is of angott and robinson.

 

I can see slight similarities between Brown and early Robinson, but honestly Brown reminds me more of someone like Eusebio Pedroza or Hilario Zapata.
