I was there that night. Benn was lucky boy that night, I doubt anyone other than a domestic ref would allowed Benn to continue for so long, he was getting murdered.
so was i jumping up and down the albert hall was a really good venue for boxing, benn really was lucky the punch that ended the fight started from the floor almost. although not as exciting i quite enjoyed the eubank/logan fight as well
I have it on good authority that Audley Harrison-Danny Williams I was so exciting that seven people at ringside died of internal haemorrhaging.
I only remember watching Eubank/Logan on TV, the first time I got to see him live was another undercard at The Royal Albert Hall I believe; the Dos Santos fight, with the TV pose that helped make the Eubank gimmick. The main event that night being Jim McDonnell very scary KO defeat to Kenny Vice. [EDIT] Just checked it was The Royal Albert Hall, like you mentioned it was brilliant for boxing, not least when the trumpets played when Bomber Bruno made an apperance.
Benn/Eubank Mercer/Lewis Mercer/Holyfield Marquez/Pac 1 & 2 Sal Sanchez/Little Red Lopez 1 Matthew Saad Muhammad/Lopez 1 Matthew Saad/Qawi 1 Tyson/Pinklon Chavez/Rosario
Nothing exciting about that fight as the fix was put in, to screw a lot of punters on the under/over:twisted: It was one of DKP's/Tyson's crimes that rarely gets a mention, but I suspect made them and a few of their friends a killing
You nailed it! What wars they were...And to think that they fought each other in 1955, and they are still around...They both defined the words "tough guys " !!!
I recently watched an old competitive bout you seldom hear mentioned anymore--lionel Washington/Dokes. Dokes looked fortunate to pull that one out and anyone that recalls the bout knew the guy had zero chance against Bowe by that stage of the game.
When I met Basilio he smacked the guy that was standing right next to me. Even at his age he still looks tough and walks around with a little smirk on his face like he knows something that you don't. Really a cool guy to be around if he's not pissed off. I'd hate to have had to face him in the ring because no matter what, you know you are going to be in a grueling fight. One of the toughest SOB's to ever live.
Washington/Snipes was a fun bout too. But another fun fight rarely mentioned is Barkley/Olajide. For three rounds, Iran inflicts Middleweight terrorism on Olajide, then in the fourth Michael lands a Bomb, and Barkley hits the deck hard. Barkley gets up like nothing has happened and continues his assault finishing The Silk off in the fifth.
After nearly taking Pinklon out early; Tyson sat out rounds three and four, so the fight got into the fifth... There was nothing exciting about a set up.
Agreed. That Snipes bout is a good one. Another good Snipes bout was the Duplooy fight. Mentioning Duplooy--that Coetzer and even the Sanders fights were gunslinger type bouts as well. That Barkley bout was just so typical of a Barkley fight in that timeframe. He really was a working man's Saad Muhammad for awhile and every fight against any caliber of an opponent was exciting and back and forth. Great tv fighter & better live. People forget how Olijade was a hot commodity at one time. Funny how often the big ko loss in their first big pressure bout ends up just ruining promising careers.
Hah! Tommy, I saw the live telecast of both Ali-Young and Corro-Valdez I & II. Watch Ali-Dunn, where Muhammad comes in at a ready 220, and picks his southpaw victim apart with darting rights. Ali was in horrid, horrid shape for Jimmy. If Young had gotten a rematch with the Muhammad of the Dunn fight, he wouldn't have enjoyed such favorable controversy. (I agree Ali-Young was way better than Ali-Dunn though.) Other exciting fights: Lewis-Ocasio Parlov-Traversaro Parlov-Skog Parlov-Fiol Parlov-Mundine Wet paint-Dry wall Camacho-Melvin Paul Mamby-Weston
