arguello was technically perfect in his punching technique but his lack of foot and head movement counts against him
I kind of disagree about his head movement, although I see what you're saying about his foot movement. I think he was just physically limited in that area, though. He didn't have fast feet but I think a lot of the footwork was excellent. He always found himself in a great position to land those picture perfect punches, so I can't really agree with that. It was technically very good, though his physical limitations were the weakness in that area. Same with Joe Louis' footwork. He had slow movement but the positions he found himself in were great. An odd suggestion, perhaps, but what about Wladimir?
Roy Jones Jr. Juan Manuel Marquez Floyd Mayweather Jr. Ricardo Lopez Salvador Sanchez Come to mind right away. :thumbsup
Finito Sanchez Mayweather Floyd Patterson Donald Curry Benny Leonard The Ghetto Wizard Gene Tunney All these were masters of the sweet science.
IMO technique also includes different styles of defense, balance and footwork so you can counter, in-fighting skills amongst others. Punching technique and combinations is not everything. And since these so called "Euro fighters" are described as stiff, they're not technically perfect by definition in order to counter and not get outworked. They may have a solid guard but sometimes you need to slip punches too. It must be underlined that no-ones perfect, but the ones that have got the most grip on things are: Duran Kalambay Sweet Pea SRR Pep Hopkins Perhaps Benitez, SRL and Floyd A candidate from active fighters would be Ward, but he needs to stop jumping in like he does sometimes and his combination punching can inprove. We have to see him against more styles too to be sure. So far, he's only beaten slightly faded Kessler who's a bit one-dimensional. Let him face a well-rounded in-fighter or a diviersified offensive force and we'll know for sure. Winky is great at what he does, but when somebody punches he often shells up and waits. I haven't seen him slip and counter that much. He could get outworked in some round and a technically "perfect" fighter would have known an answer to that. His feet, while good, could be better (B-Hop). He had no answer for Hopkins' movement there and predictably followed him. McCallum has too slow feet. Watch the utter schooling he recieved against Kalambay and you notice how they disable him from effectively pressure Sumbu.
Jones was a wonderful fighter technically. His timing in particular was impeccable, as was his ability to slip in and out of range effortless and throw lead rights and hooks. He wasn't textbook in the slightest which is probably what you are thinking of, but technically, he was fantastic. I wouldn't say perfect though, but again, nobody is.
textbook thats what i meant tommy my bad. Roy really wasnt textbook thats why he struggled once his legs and reflexes went away
