When thinking about an all-time ranking for Oscar De La Hoya...

...do you consider the Trinidad fight and the Mosley rematch as wins for Oscar, or do you leave them out of your thinking?

I scored the Tito fight to Oscar by 4 points and the Mosley rematch to Oscar by 5 points, therefore both were very clear victories in my view.

If you consider them as wins, then this is some formidable evidence for a comparatively high ranking for the Golden Boy.

If you do not, then your ranking of Oscar is likely to be much, much lower.

Now I know the standard response for many people will be "yeah but he got a gift vs Sturm as well" etc etc, but leaving the dubious decisions that Oscar got in his favour aside for now and referring specifically to those two fights with those two HOF fighters, do you consider them as wins or not?

If you don't consider them as wins, then it's likely you rank Oscar some way below the top tier of greats from this era, like Pacquiao, Mayweather, Jones and perhaps Hopkins.

If you consider them as wins, then it's likely that Oscar's resume is so strong that he'd have to be considered the equal of these guys - maybe even their superior.

    Thoughts? :bbb

Definitely. Although it usually ends up not panning out that way. For example nobody credits armstrong with winning the MW title even though he got severely jobbed.

I don't consider them wins because it's not inconceivable for me to see the judges scoring those fights at least a draw.

Only in special circumstances like Whitaker/Chavez do I ignore the official verdicts. As you can tell from the weekend just gone, some people have a distorted view on what the word "robbery" truly means. It is only a robbery if there is zero basis or case for scoring the fight at least a draw.

I can honestly say I do not believe it is remotely acceptable for a sane judge to deny Oscar De La Hoya a win in either of those fights. I thought they were both clear as day, easy to score, substantial margins of victory.

Then we have a difference of opinion. Wouldn't be the first time, certainly won't be the last.

Cool thread. :good I predict a lengthy and interesting discussion will arise.

Oscar won those fights , but lost to sturm , so 2 wins 1 loss, at his peak he was a sight to behold an awesome fighter

I predict peoples ATg status definitely including their losses and how they looked in their losses, In DLH's case he has such a good resume that closely losing to the best oh his gerneration while beating some acts as a bolster.

I'll be sure to re-watch both fights in the near future and get back to you.

My answer is clear, though. In the case of debatable decisions, I will go according to the judges - even if I disagree with them.

I can see how someone would score it for Trinidad ala froch-dirrell, that being that Dirrell was doing it best to avoid any confrontation like DLH in that fight, but I honestly see Mosley/DLH II being pretty clear cut for DLH.

Well i don't consider them wins, and i know you said not to bring them up, but Oscar got a few dubious decisions in his favour too. And the reason that i bring them up anyway is that i don't consider those fights losses just like i don't consider his fights with Mosley and Trinidad wins. Seems only right to me.

What i consider those fights to be are close, competitive fights with top-notch opponents that could have gone either way.

Anyway i do rate Oscar slightly behind Pacquiao, Mayweather, Hopkins and Jones because he lost as many big fights as he won. You can't really say that about those other guys. Well maybe about Hopkins but ALL of his losses were debatable and none of his wins were. Also he had to wait until his late 30's/early 40's to get the chance to fight the very best and i consider those extenuating circumstances.

Wins counted as losses- Trinidad, Mosley II

Losses counted as wins- Sturm, Whitaker, Quartey

My own policy is different. I go with my own judgement, my own scorecard. I find it impossible to argue with conviction about wins and losses if I don't actually believe they were wins and losses. That just doesn't compute in my brain, how to treat a win as a win when I don't believe it was a win, or how to discuss a loss as a loss when I don't believe it was a loss.

i defintely think he beat tito but on the othe hand he didnt do himself any favour by back pedaling while letting titoi walk him down etc.

i can see them scoring it how they did although it was split decision. regardless i gave it oscar by two points.

oscar is in my top 35 atg.

and if he had legitimately beat them i.e shane and tito as wel as the other atg on his resume such as floyd pac and bernard he would have been so much greater, possibly held in the a higher regard then sugar ray leonard.

In essence, he'd be rated much higher if he was a much better fighter.
