When thinking about an all-time ranking for Oscar De La Hoya...

I didn't say it was a gift. I was just giving my opinion on the fights. I've had Whitaker winning by at least 2 points every time I've watched it. Very close fight, though, and I can understand opposing views.

You make it seem as if I claimed Trinidad the rightful winner. I thought Oscar won handily. However, as to your second point: Whitaker may not've landed a hundred more punches, but according to Punchstat (as useless a device as there is, in my honest opinion) he out-threw, out-landed, and landed at a higher percentage than Oscar, dropping him in the process.

No issue with that. I personally scored it to Quartey by a point. Oscar simply didn't do enough in the middle rounds for me.

You actually scored that fight for Oscar? He won no more than 3 rounds on my card.

Oscar loved his paydays, that's for sure.

Also:

Tito- 9-3 or 8-4 at best for Trinidad
Mosley 1- close SD loss
Mosley 2- Same as the Trinidad fight, and Mosley was on roids!
Hopkins- a weight where Oscar didn't belong in, and past his best days
Floyd-Oscar clearly past his best
Pac- Oscar completely shot

 

Well ok but are you going to take away his wins over Quartey, Whitaker, Sturm? Mosley 2 also is up for debate, Mosley landed meatier harder punches and scored some big body shots, thats why half the ringside reporters had it to Mosley (if I remember rightly) and many round here did in the aftermath

 

I disagree with you on a few other things, but this comment of yours was the one I considered completely off the wall considering that Oscar has beat more champions and formers champions than Mayweather, Pacquiao, and Mosley just to name a few fighters people consider ATG today.

He also won more title fights than tha above mentioned, won more titles than all three mentioned, and beat higher claibre fighters than the three.

Also, unlike Mosley and Pacquiao, Oscar has never lost to a non champion, (or in Pac's case a tomato can) before he fell off his prime, or EVER for that matter.

You need to get your priorities straight. :-(

 

The Quartey fight was very close.
The Whitaker fight was close but very clear with Oscar up by atleast 2 points.
The Sturm fight was also close, when I saw it live I scored it 6-6, but I can easily see someone scoring it 7-5 for Sturm, and someone with an agenda scoring it 8-4.

So comparing those wins to the DLH's losses against Mosley II and Tito where at best each oppoenent won 4 rounds (and that's being generous) is not very valid.

 

I don't consider Mosley an "ATG", either. Mayweather has the talent, but not the pedigree. Pacquiao is the closest thing around today I can consider a true great. A lot of it has simply to do with how I view the fighters skill level. Oscar was an excellent fighter, obviously, just not up there with the best I've ever seen. Just my opinion.

 

I don't understand you then. I think its safe to say that 99.9999% of boxing experts consider Oscar De La Hoya a great. Wether you have him in the top 100, or top 50 like I do, he is still Greater than Most world champions that have ever lived.

You say Pac is the closest thing to ATG, and you base it on Skill, but a prime Oscar was a more skilled fighter than Pac. And Oscar beat better ATG fighters than Pac, and more champions..

..just based on your comments, I think you don't have a clear understanding what ATG means.

 

Oscar beat Mosley twice, in my book. I also think he beat Trinidad. So yes, he is an ATG. He has always taken on the best in every division, and proved he was capable of beating anyone, even the ATGs like Ray Robinson.

 

However, I think Oscar lost to Felix Sturm (by 2 points) and Pernell Whitaker (by one point). I do understand why some people scored those fights for Oscar, though.

 

I always go with the official decision whether I not I agree with it.

No u need to keep listening to people and rewatch the fight. Oscar won the 9th and possibly the 10th? i laugh when people like to exaggerate on this. Oscar swept 9 of the first 10 rounds with the 4th being even. Tito won the last 2 or 3 rounds. Dont take a rocket scientist to figure out who won more rounds. Giving Tito 4 rounds is being nice.
