What most young posters don't realize is that they're just as jaded as many of the old-timers. They lambast Louis for holding his left hand down, while completely disregarding the fact that Lewis, both Klitschko's, Mayweather, etc. do the same. They base all of their knowledge when comparing eras on completely seperate sports such as track and field by showing the increases in athleticism in their fields. What they don't take into consideration is that boxing is a sport far more reliant on mental strength/adaptability than any of these sports. Hell, it's more comparable to other intellect driven professions such as authoring, poetry, music, etc. than it is to something like track and field.

When you take into account the vastly declining interest and participation in the sport, with so fewer gyms, with most of the better athletic minds/talents driven to compete in other sports, with the top trainers slowly dying out, it gives you a larger perspective on why boxing is dying out. Both as a spectator sport and in terms of the class of its participants.

If it has evolved so, why is it that the best trainers of even the modern day remain the likes of Ray Arcel and Eddie Futch, guys who grounded their techniques from the 20's to the 40's? Guys who've laid out some of the best gameplans and trained some of the best fighters to have ever lived, including those from recent times. Futch up to his death claimed Charley Burley the best he'd ever seen, and said he'd rather watch Holman Williams shadow box than watch any modern fighter in the ring.

The only people that believe boxing to have evolved in any way are those that either haven't any technical knowledge themselves, or simply haven't done the research/watched the footage with open minds.

David Haye is not a skilled fighter, he's merely an athlete. Watch him go for the kill upon hurting an opponent, and compare it to Louis. The different in technique, economy and poise is overwhelmingly in Louis's favor. Some don't see it because, quite simply, they don't want to. Ignorance is bliss.

How is this stupid? Louis beat several guys with similar styles and physical attributes to Wlad.

He annhiliated perhaps the closest fighter in history to mimic Wlad, in Primo Carnera.

As you can see, Wlad looks like an exact duplicate in the way he moves, his stance, his speed, and his style.

Except Wlad is fighting a southpaw bum, and Carnera is fighting probably the best heavyweight fighter of all time.

Louis is a stylistic nighmare for Wlad. He would duck under Wlad's jabs, and had the speed to counter and respond.

Wlad throws no uppercuts, and his inside game consists mostly of holding. Louis had incredibly fast combinations, and had every punch in the book. Every time he got inside, Wlad would pay, and Wlad doesn't have the chin to withstand that kind of punishment.

Look I'm a big Louis fan but I a little tired of people using Joe Louis' performance against Carnera as evidence that he could or should beat either Klitschko. While I do agree that he'd have a much easier time with Wlad than Vitali, I really don't see him having his way with either. The bottomline is that Joe Louis' feet would get him into trouble against them both as he would have to take 2-3 jabs at a time just to set up those combinations. Any HW who is at a 4-5 inch reach disadvantage and who also has bad feet will have a tough time dealing with a top 10 HW jab ...even Louis. He would simply have to work too hard and take too much punishment to set those patented combinations up.

Louis didn't have "bad feet", though. That's a myth that's been exposed too many times to continue to be perpetuated. His feet did exactly what he wanted them to.
