Normally a fighter starts at a low weight and works his way up in weight divisions when he gets older, i would like to know if there where fighters who spend most of their time at a certain weight class and were not great there but then they moved down in weight and really dominated a lower division. Has that ever happened?
And could you name fighters of today who you think could be great when they moved down in weight

Right now I can't think of any fighters who were not great at one weight where they spent most their time but then became great when they moved up or down in weight.

Maybe Glen Johnson is the closest example for moving up. Moving down, I have none really.

I think Bernard Hopkins's first fights were at 175, then he went down to 160...correct me if I am wrong

Sugar Shane Mosley I think, the man fought his way up light weight to lightmiddle and even managed to beat ODLH to become unified champion at that weightclass (which was okay because beating Oscar was meaningfull at that time) untill he met Winky... Mosley lost twice, had a couple of more fights at LMW and some at WW... His last fight was against Mayorga at LMW before coming down to WW to beat Margaritho for WBA strap. Floyd was still retired at that moment and Pac was not yet in the picture because he was fighting Ricky Hatton at LWW making Mosley the man to beat at WW. Even when Money was back and Pac beat Cotto to become WBO WW champ, Mosley was still considered the best WW at that moment :D

In a nutshell: Mosley fought his way up to LMW, won a few straps but was overshadowed by Winky (who was the top LMW)... had a couple of more fights at LMW before coming down to dominate WW division!! Is that the answer you wanna hear? :D

haha yeah mosley is good, i would get the logic behind such a move if your division is to stacked for you to be competitive, e.g. eddie chambers if he would move down to cruiser he could have much more of a impact then he would fighting at heavyweight.

Mosley won a few straps at 154 by getting a gift over DLH, and by using STEROIDS. :bart

    Nonito Donaire
    Lucian Bute
    Andre Berto

Mundine has moved backwards, winning "titles" in three weight classes while shedding pounds instead of adding them.

Hatton established himself as the best LWW, moved up to take the WBA WW-title, moved down + up to face Money for WBC WW-title, was not succesfull at that weight, so he moved down to beat Lazcano and Pauly to establish himself once again as the best LWW, and the man to beat!!

True but the thread says: "Fighters that weren't great at that class and moved down to dominate" I guess Mosley winning straps getting gift + using PED + winning a few (not so meaningfull) fights at LMW made his LMW conquest not so great huh :D

That's not what I said, I mean he never lost his position as the best LWW, even after losing to Money at WW he held on the lineal LWW (I do not mean Ring title) since winning from Tszyu till losing it to Pac because he never lost at LWW till he faced Pac
