I also have Coetzee being TKO'd by Barkley in the late 90s when both guys were way past it...... I taped that off ESPN2..... The fight was sloppy, but fun to witness.....

I have the fight on tape...... Coetzee went to the ropes where Bruno came over with a right to Gerrie's button...... Fight over....... G.C. was through the ropes, on his back, done for the night...

Yes i was at this fight pretty good scrap between to washed up guys. I remember this fight and saw Genaro Hernandez and Gabriel Ruelas(champs at the time) at the fight. Comebackin Carlos Palomino kod comebacking Rene Arredondo on this card. Saw this fight at the Hollywood Paladium with my Uncle who just passed Joe(rip).

Actually Mercer improved and got more serious after losing to Holmes. He was much more improved after when he fought Lewis(could have gone either way) and Holy to a close fight.

He has good wins over Prime Bert Cooper,Damiani,Morrison, and rejuvenated Tim Witherspoon. His razor close losses to prime Lewis and Holyfield should count for a lot.

The Damiani win was flukey, to say the least. Witherspoon was well past his best.

Mercer is a hard fighter to rate objectively. He looked awesome against Lewis and Holyfield but I think styles had to do with that and I think they overlooked Mercer a little bit.

He was a granite chinned fighter with good (not great) power and had a nice jab. I think guys that could stick and move would always have him in trouble.

Arredondo looked like he dived against Palomino........ Palo could punch okay, but never was a killer shark with power....... Arredondo being an ex-champ at 140 showed NO EFFORT at all as to wanting to win...... Arredondo came into the fight with a sleeping bag tied to his back.....

Mercer would whoop Coetzee's ass. Normally, one would say that Gerrie had a punchers chance, but prime Mercer had a granite chin and the ability to get Gerrie out of there in the mid rounds.

Rumor has it that Arredondo came into the ring drunk. He always had a shaky chin anyways and even the old Palomino would have got him out of there anyways. Palomino ended up doing pretty well for being close to 50 and off for so long, he gave a prime Wilfredo Rivera all he wanted.

Witherspoon was past it but he turned it back for that fight he really looked good against Mercer. This was not the same old witherspoon that loss to Nielsen,Everett Martin,Jimmy Thunder etc etc.

I dont think the styles of Lewis and Holyfield had much do to with it. Mercer looked like a much more quicker and complete fighter than he had in the past. Not the same sluggish brawler that lost to Holmes or was getting outboxed by Damiani. It would have taken an excellent heavyweight to beat the versions that fought Lewis and Holyfield to standstills.

I wish I had his fights with the Japanese dude who beat him out of his WBC title and I think Rene A. was also stopped by Roger Mayweather in L.A. in the 80s.......

Arredondo looked like a ***** against 47 year old Palomino.......:deal:bbb

    Nope.

I really, really doubt it. This fight would be competitive. Coetzee has the boxing skill and mobility to outbox Mercer quite easily.

Your talking about Hamada? That dude could punch.

Yey but his Ko over a prime "Lightning"Lonne Smith at the time was impressive no one ever kod Smith again not even a prime Chavez. Although Lonnie learned to run after getting iced by Arredondo.
