the most interesting piece was when he showed off his Mongoose defense.

i know! I think he used it against louis once he was stung, but this shows it was more a part of his game than we thought. it adds a few more dimentions to him. he clearly must have used more than is known from his filmed fights.

If a fighter beats the best of his era then he probably isnt that stupid.

If Baer was as crude as some of his critics on this site claim then Max Schmeling would have beaten him and Primo Carnera would have beten him. These are not the kind of fighters that you will get past just by having a dynamite punch and a solid chin.

With Baer it´s just with most fighters with a big punch. They get reduced to just that.

exactly, the man had tools. there was a lot of talent back then, to stand out he had to be good. pity the big punch overshadowed what else he had.

Doing something with a compliant partner and pulling it off in the ring are two drastically different undertakings. Max fell in love with his power and knew hot to get it over on most of the opponents he faced (say what you will about them). Other than that, he didn't seem too concerned with the finer points.

    Stop right here.

Baer was the heavyweight champion of the world. Let’s not act like he wasn’t genuine in his demonstrations. Why even phrase it like this? Kinda screwed up to me.

Baer demonstrates many non skilled moments on film in actual fights. He could get away with it due his toughness and chin and at times the level of his opposition but when faced with an elite operator like Louis he didn't have a single solution.

He staggered Louis a few times. But yeah, very bad stylistic matchup for him, especially considering Louis is second best HW of all time.

If you want to see Baers skills, the Carnera fight might be the best place to go, especially because there are some very clear versions of the film.

Baer clearly had natural boxing skills, despite going drunk with power at times.

The combination of footwork, head movement, reflexes, punching pace, and punching angles shows a man with skills.

Maybe you could ask yourself how on Earth your modern enhanced Herculean examples might fare against an elite operator like Louis?

What technical solution would they have to Louis second guessing their moves and beating them to the draw?

Any fighter is only as good as the other man let’s him look.

Don’t forget Baer knocked out the guy who exposed Joe Louis. Baer clearly had something about him.
