Because the 1959 was a beast with brains.

If you have all the HW champs fight each other in a round robin in their respective career primes, I think that he would end up with the best record. In sum, he could overpower the superior boxer and outbox the rest of the beasts.

Would 1959 Liston defeat 1967 Ali? I say no. But frankly, I can't quite see anyone else handling him.

If you say no, then why is Ali below Liston?

    Because he is a Liston-butthugger.

I believe that with Futch behind him, Frazier would defeat Ali, even in '67. I'm less confident that Ali would defeat Holmes than I am that Liston would beat anyone else besides Ali.

If we're talking purely head to head then I think I'd go with something like:

    1. Muhammad Ali
    2. Lennox Lewis
    3. Larry Homes
    4. Joe Louis
    5. George Foreman
    6. Evander Holyfield
    7. Joe Frazier
    8. Mike Tyson
    9. Wlad Klitshcko
    10. Vitali Klitschko
    11. Rocky Marciano
    12. Sonny Liston
    13. Riddick Bowe
    14. Jack Johnson
    15. Jack Dempsey

    (Awaits the backlash)

    And you're a Foreman butthugger.

But Frazier isn't on your list either!

Styles make fights. Pep is far greater than Angott but I'd bet that Angott would defeat Pep almost every time.

I forgot Frazier, but he would score pretty low on that list because his high-pressure style is the perfect complement to that left hook that exploited a bad habit of Ali. That being said, he is too small and one-armed to be a match for most of the others.

Marciano, Dempsey and Johnson outta there and it would have been respectable list.
