In the pic in my avatar. Was Louis an amateur then, he looks quite slim?

    Pro

It could be the angle of the pic and the camera.

But he wasn't that big with mass.

His muscles were also smoother/classic boxer muscles. They showed more during training and fights when they were worked up.

joe louis was a beast.with some heavy lifting and olympic weightlifting, proper nutrition,peds..he would be rock solid 220 lbs, without losing any speed and he would be more explosive and powerful.

He would certainly lose some speed if he put on that much weight.
And he would be like Holyfield in that respect, basically weaker then all the big heavyweights.

If Louis woulkd have become more "explosive and " powerful " when in his prime, he would have been banned from boxing...Too lethal....

   ..................

He has a point though. Today, with the understanding of nutrition and training, backed by science to fit your specific needs, he certainly could routinely be 210+ pounds since he was already 200 pounds in his prime give or take some pounds depending on the fight.

As far as weight-lifting, you can do quite well with Plyometrics...even throw on a weighted vest during routines. He could weight-lift as well but if anything, he could stick with dead-lifts, squats and power-cleans to add incredible overall body strength while putting on mass. No real need to get into all the bodybuilding b.s.
The rest, Chin-ups, push-ups, dips, etc. with your own body-weight and/or a weighted vest.
He would still want those smooth muscles he has. I've always felt they were better for boxers.

    NO NEED FOR ILLEGAL PEDS.
"Legal" PEDs he could use if he wanted.

Just the usual supplements: Protein Powder(s), Vitamin and Minerals, etc.

Even back then, really, he could have increased his weight to 210 pounds quite easily given they did have knowledge of nutrition and weight-lifting even then on some level. Eugene Sandow would be a good example with this.
It's just boxing tends to stray away from some things.

Stamina wise, I don't think 210 would harm him at all specifically because he is 6'2, his frame is actually quite thick and looked like it needed some extra weight on it, and, he was a very patient/relaxed fighter who knew how to preserve energy and when to use it.

From the look of the photo, I'd say it was shot in camp in the late '30s.
