:patsch Looks is not what you think.

I can look at Oscar at 147 when he fought Pac and say..."hey, he looks fit." That doesn't mean he was. Crash-dieting to strip weight off is not good. That's the first thing. Living a horrid life outside of the gym is also not good. That all catches up with you.

Don't forget Holyfield. He still looks great physical today. That doesn't mean he is. And even back in the day, he looked good going into the Moorer fight but how was his health on the inside?

It's not only what you do in training camp but what you have been doing all year long and before. The body goes down way quicker than it takes to build up.

You accept that a man that stopped training properly, WENT TO JAIL FOR 3 YEARS rotting away , was still Prime?
Especially given how far he was from his original training regimen in Physical work, technical/skill work, and most of all Mental preparation.

Ali is a perfect example of what an athlete that relies on his physical attributes can suffer after coming off a long layoff.
And remember, Ali was FREE, and not rotting away in a jail cell.
The positive however being in jail was that it forced Tyson to live clean.
But this wasn't a Sonny Liston and Bernard Hopkins case where those two were actually training and fighting as boxers while in Jail. Tyson was forbidden from that.

Watch the Charlie Rose interview with Atlas and so on when he was about to get released. Also read some S.I. magazine articles around that time. Few thought he would be the same even physically, let alone mentally. It's just the hype Promotion machine started again and fans bout into it. He was never going to be the same first off unless he got himself together mentally. And then physically, he would have to reboot his system and work his way back up properly. He never did it quite like he needed to. That's on him though. Nobody is to blame but himself.

You are dead wrong with what "Prepared" means.

That will help you understand what Peak is about. What being "Prepared" is about.

Tyson's story is a great example of what to do and what not to do.

The idiotic part to this all is that Tyson knew it himself which to me makes it even worse. Especially as far as his reign as Champion.

And Writers, Historians, Trainers, etc. have all mentioned the difference.

    Here is just one example:

KD -- I always felt that Tyson was a small heavyweight and he was often misunderstood and under-rated in terms of the level of genuine skill that he brought into the ring.

That’s right. A lot of people did not understand what they were watching when they saw Mike Tyson. He was not some slugger as such.

KD -- He was not a super-power in terms of his physical strength

Oh no. One thing about Mike Tyson that I don’t think a lot of people understand because of, let’s say his psychological-social problems, a lot of people think he’s some kind of stupid brute. He’s not. He happens to be, as far as I can see-- and I don’t know the man but I have had a couple of conversations with him-- an intelligent young man. He’s probably one of the most intelligent fighters, certainly in terms of boxing, that we’ve seen. His emulation of the Jack Dempsey’s style. His knowledge of boxing history is considerable, by the way, and when you listen to him, this is not a stupid man. He’s a very misunderstood boxer, and people also do not understand that his skills eroded after a certain period. People will say Ah he was never anything,. They start to question him all the way back. No. He peaked when he knocked out Michael Spinks in the first round. But beginning about a year after that he really started to go down hill.

KD -- That was a period when he had separated from Rooney, his remaining D’Amato trainer, and he no longer had a real trainer who understood his style.

Right. Tyson was a fighter who needed a certain edge. He needed to be on edge. And when he lost that he lost a tremendous amount. He still has too much power and over-all ability for ninety or ninety-five percent of all the fighters out there. There’s no question about that. But at his peak I can’t imagine—and I say this with all respect and deference for Evander Holyfield—but at his peak I can’t imagine Tyson being defeated by Holyfield. At his peak he would have been a terrific fight even for the peak Muhammad Ali.

Tyson vs Spinks has to be the most overrated performance ever, in a purist sense of the word. The result is awesome, but this idea Tyson was brilliant under Rooney and did subtle things while starting to suck his way against Bruno and Williams is laughable. I remember hearing about Rooney's great analysis of a fight. Yeah, it goes something like that "Tyson is rushing him now. Closing the gap, yeah look at him, he's throwing punches with bad intentions. He got on him, good uppercut there. I want that left to the body though. I hope this Tyson at his best, he could be better." He could've had an off-night against Douglas... doesn't matter he gets spanked either way.

    Truth. :deal

Tyson-fangirls will not admit that their rapey-hero was at his peak when Douglas beat him to within an inch of his life.

Round 10 of Douglas KO10 Tyson was epic stuff -

"iron" Mike Tyson, considered invincible by teh mainstream sports media and casual boxing fans was KO'd by a 42-1 underdog Buster.

Tyson had all of his head movement skills that night, BUT - Douglas solved the puzzle of teh fast yet predictable motions of it and timed it with his long accurate jab and straight right.

The media hype did help. And those odds were way to inflated. Douglas still had a good run going into the Tyson fight. One of those opponents was Oliver McCall. McCall had high praise for him.

    As for Douglas vs. Tyson:
Given the sparring with Trevor Berbick stories, Berbick may have beaten Tyson that night. Berbick, yes, Berbick, was getting the better of Tyson in sparring. That's how bad he was, specifically with head-movement.

Both could win but I'm going with the faster , slightly heavier with the better defence here..mike. But I would not bet a cent.

I think liston was more intimidating than Tyson and has a stylistic advantage over him, however I think mike may have been just too good a fighter, real toss up this one.

Apart from Patterson, what other notable name did Liston visibly intimidate in the ring?
