Joe Louis. Was he a little bit "special" in the intellectual sense?

In interviews he seems a little too deadpan.

Was he a guy of inferior intelligence or a diagnosed ****** (that was common in those days)?

Ps. Please, don't get emotional about this.

    ever been to the South?

He wasn't an actor and/or a politician. He was a fighter.

And I don't think he spent his time reading books and hanging out in the Library.

You can't be ******ed and be HW Champion of the World like he was.

Also remember, and maybe it doesn't hold with this, but he was instructed carefully on how to present himself.

Look at him when he knocks people out. Most would have jumped for Joy when knocking out Max Schmeling, but what did Joe do?

I think it would be hard to try to act like others want you to act. Much easier to just be yourself.

What Joe was like behind the scenes is what you would have to find out.

Environment, Education, is quite important to stimulate the brain.

So I would say, once his environment changed, once he found something to stimulate his brain where he had interest and had a teacher that could teach him...he flourished.

Now how far does that go with Joe...don't know.

Ali struggled in school, however, he was a sharp talker.

I'm not looking at these guys to be Geniuses though. Just smart enough to learn how to box and be Champ.

Well, you can be severely Autistic.

You may well be able to hold the championship and be mentally ******ed, which just means low IQ.

As far as learning, it's hard to know all the reasons. He could have also been dyslexic and back then, you tended to be ****ed. Back then you were just "slow." Add that to a speech impediment, and that's another disability to deal with.

He started in the South where I think he lived until he was a teen, then moved to Detroit....and he was Black. That's a lot going against you growing up in that era.

If you want to talk about something that can withhold your potential, that's a recipe for it.

A form of it and/or to some degree?

    Don't know. Maybe.

There is a surfer, Clay Marzo, who is incredible, who has Asperger Syndrome, so maybe. I'm just not sure how that all works.

It is interesting now that you brought it up.

    Works on a spectrum.

High functioning and Aspergers will be one and the same from now on in the DSM.

You can have a low functioning autistic that has marvellous memory, like Rain Man.

    You get interesting combos.

What did you think of the video?

You think Louis may have had it on some level?

I think it is likely that if Louis was around to day he might be diagnosed as having Asppergers Syndrome or a Nonverbal Learning Disability (NLD).
They are a lot alike. The main difference is that someone with NLD is not considered to be on the autistic scale, and also dose not obesses like someone with Aspergers dose.
I am diagnosed as having NLD and ADhD. It is possible that I have Asppergers.

I was watching a documentary on his Joe Louis's fights with Max Schmeling, and it brought things about Louis's personal life. I watched it on the site that you tube. I think it was made by HBO. Anyone who has Asppergers and or NLD. Is somewhat an expert and knows what to look for.
I brought this up after watching it on a message board for people with Asppergers or otherwise on the Autistic Spectrum. I will only share what I wrote. "I was watching a documentry on the Max Schmeling vs. Joe Louis fights. It got me thinking was Joe Louis an Aspie? It was mentioned by some of his friends that he atended a special needs school and was very interverted. He also did not have a very expresive face It was also long and narow, or show a lot of emotion. He was extremely gifted at what he did his form was near perfect and could hit with a lot of power."
While the few people who responded to me were doubtful. You have to understand that people with Asppergers or NLD can have negative self images when it comes to athletic ability. One responder clamed to know Louis when he was a hotel greater and said he was a party animal. I'll take his word for it, but keep in mind that if you give us drugs or alcohol we can become a lot more sociable than we are normally.
I recall hearing that he used cocaine after he finished boxing. This would not surprise me at all. It is not uncommon for someone with Asppergers or NLD to use "hard" drugs. As a way of dealing with social situations.

While I can not say for sure. I think it is very likely that he had Asppergers and or NLD.

I also wonder about Floyd Mayweather Jr.
I think the "Money" is an act, and he comes from a boxing family.
However look at how much of a gym rat he is. (obsession)
Also it may be a reason why he is not married or linked to a woman. (lack of social skills).
While he is more expressive than Joe Louis was his face is kind of long.

so we are going to speculate if joe louis was slow or mentally ******ed or some other a mental disorder, based off of interviews?

ok, dude I will try not to get "emotional" but if you had some sort of proof or were making a professional diagnosis thats one thing, but this is bull****.

    This is a stupid thread.

Im sure the klitscho's are smarter than louis was with their phd's and being multilingual . Too bad louis is more than twice the boxer they are.
