While amazing, Joe Louis in regular footage does not look like a boxing god.

    Joe Louis in HD, does.

It's not a coincidence that when footage gets remastered and improved, the fighters skill in those films are also perceived to increase.

Even Ali brushed aside Jack Dempsey early in his career saying he has no skill, hes just a dirty brawler, his footwork is awful, and he knows nothing about boxing.

However years later while watching Dempsey vs Tunney he claims that both fighters are scientific greats, using excellent footwork, distance judgement, and great punches.

And that ALI who had mis characterized the old time greats. Imagine some of these forum posters who have never even laced up gloves

Just watched a clip of the Irish Derby, 1919, the horses moved like Fitz and Corbett-make of that what you will but it seemed to me the thoroughbreds didn't know how to run like their modern brethern.

Footage like this, footage of such poor quality has numerous pitfalls which denies the watcher on numerous levels. You simply can't accurately 'absorb' footage like this.

To gain whatever appreciation may be attained one must look back to the time, observe contemporary accounts, understand their styles then and try to piece it together with multiple viewings. Tinkering with the brightness/contrast and speed with this footage can help.

Degrading present footage is the best way to demonstrate the implications of lesser technology. The Klitschko/Peter attempt is a decent one, but needs to be knocked down a few more notches.

Now this may be just my opinion but... when people discuss about the topic, post videos and links, share their thoughts... isn't it extremely stupid for one to came forward like Jesus's brother or Moises's cousin and throw one lousy, garbage inspired phrase? How familiar are you with this sentiment? No, don't bother answering, just a rhetorical question.
PS: ain't nothing from my opening post to suggest the garbage you wrote.
