Who takes it? I think I got Quarry by decision. Bugner is very tough and had good defense, and he was rarely stopped or hurt in his prime.
Good post Tommy. In '73 Frazier really did hurt him when he dropped him with a left hook and then let up on him as Bugner was going down and wide open for a finishing punch, but aside from that as you said in his prime he had a very reliable chin. Even at that stage though I believe Jerry would have found an opening and stopped him with a follow up onslaught ala Mac Foster and Earnie Shavers.
Yes, but that was as good as a left hook as you could see! In his prime, he rarely got hurt, and had very good defensive skills. Foster never stopped Bugner. Shavers kind of fouled him when he stopped him, he held behind the head with one hand and then threw that right uppercut, similar to what he did to Ellis. I believe he got stopped on cuts? Quarry WOULD be able to counter Bugner, but Bugner would be saftey first as always. Quarry wouldn't have anything to counter. it's a very interesting fight.
Funnily enough,I came up with this thread about a year ago. Good match up,it is too. Both guys in their prime, and on their day were not good enough to beat the best, but you'd have to make them favourites over the rest. I lean towards Quarry by decision,as he was the more consistent out of the two. Bugner had the ability to beat Jerry, though.
i'll agree with quarry beating bugner on points.bugner was really negative in some fights but was very durable
Joe Bugner did not throw enough punches to ever beqt Quarry Bodell, Middleton, Lyle, Shavers. (Quarry 4-0 BUGNER 0-4).
Bugner did beat Ellis, who beat Quarry, and also fared better against Frazier and Ali. The fight is intriguing. Quarry did well against big sluggers that he could pick off, but Bugner presents a different problem to Lyle or Foster. It could be a bit of a stinker, with Bugner fighting his usual conservative fight and counterpuncher Quarry having to force the issue. Depends on which version of both turns up. Best to best Quarry wins, though on one of his off nights he could lose to Bugner. I don't see a stoppage unless Quarry gets cut.
Quarry hit hard and the Quarry that fought Mac,Lyle,Shavers could box and go to the body good with a plan. Jerry is not going to take Bugner out with one shot but if he went to the body and the head he could get the stop. My thinking is Quarry UD but Joe's movement not really allowing Jerry to tee off
Quarry was having back issues for Ellis and he was not technically at this best at this time but the Henry Cooper fight was tough for Joe so picture Quarry who was a bit tougher and cut less than old Henry
This is balanced out, though,by Bugner doing better against Muhammad Ali and Joe Frazier than Quarry did, albeit in losing performances
Even match but not one that is likely to please the crowd. Bugner played it safe and conserved himself in a lot of his bigger fights while Quarry liked to counter off of aggressors. This doesn't exactly make for a scenario where either man will push the action. Of course Jerry from time to time took it to the other guy as he did against Lyle and Shavers, but I don't know if I see that happening here. My pick would be Quarry on points for being the slightly busier of the two, but I would never have paid money to watch this.
Truth to tell it's Probably Jerry's fight to win or Lose.. Jerry did tend to shine when up against an opponent who is Looking for him.. His history tends to show that Jerry could be dragged into the slow lane by a Non-confrontational opponent, And Joe, Survival Instincts to the Fore could be a Points Pinching Scavenger with that Left Jab, and Grab, Hit and Flit, routine, Eddie Machen, Jimmy Ellis both skirted Trouble with Jerry and Prospered, Albeit Jerry a Prospect against Old Fox Eddie, and Hindered with back trouble with Ellis, There always seemed to be excuses, The fight thats makes me uncertain of a victory for Jerry was his struggle in scraping past Larry Middleton, Jerry edged it with a strong finish... But Give Bugner that Early success and momentum and he might get Bold and hard to discourage.. Especially with "Mr Smith whispering in Joseph's Ear "Larry did beat a young prospect Bugner , actually floored him and broke his Jaw, But this was an emerging Bugner... nowhere near Prime, The Bug was Strong in the Clinches and took a Great Punch, and Knew how to Nullify when hit, Jerry would find him a Big strong ackward Frustrating Point Pinching Bad day at the office... Give Jerry a "back to the Wall "situation and he will fight like a Demon... Give Jerry a "Quarry" he cant Dig Out... and frustration will be Bugners Ally - It's Jerry fight to Win... But something tells me he Loses.. with a Suitable Excuse at the ready..Bugner on Points
