In terms of total hype, it's Calzaghe for sure. With that said, I should confess that I like him a lot. I thought he was a heck of a fighter. But I define hype as a discrepancy between fantasy and reality. And in that case, Joe takes the prize. Again, he was very good, but his resume is certainly not that of an ATG, which is what most of his fans claim he is.
When you say hype job. It implies that the guy is a total phony with no skills. Not someone who may have dissapointed fans. Zab does not fall into hype job category. Hype jobs will be people like Tye fields, Mark Gastineau, or Richie Melito.
I dont like calling any fighter a hypejob but it usually means that a boxer has been hyped up but fails to live up to the expectations.How did Hamed not live up to the hype?He wasnt destroy by Barrera or anything like that either he was just beaten clearly and had to take some hard punches in the fight.
Hatton was hyped but he still has great wins on his record. kostya tszyu, luis collazo, jose luis castillo, carlos maussa, paulie malignaggi, juan urango, lazcano, eamon magee, vince phillips and his only two defeats came at the hands of manny and floyd. The fight against floyd at the time was huge and hatton was winning the fight at the half way mark in my opinion, of course floyd was able to figure hatton out and we all know the ending. Against manny, hatton simply got his tactics all wrong and paid the price for underestimating mannys speed and power. That being said the ko punch would've knocked an elephant out! So like I said hatton probably was hyped like most popular fighters are but he still has a great record and for me should be a future hall of famer not only for what he achieved in the ring but what he did outside of the ring too, an absolute gentleman who got boxing back on the map in the uk especially. his ppv numbers and fan base speak for themselves!
I agree with your definition of hypejob, and Hamed falls right into that category. There have been many fighters built up to be the next big thing and fell flat early in their careers. But Hamed, fell right at the peak of his hype. It would be like ODLH and all the hype from HBO he received retiring after losing to Tito. Once you meet another great in defeat its how you comeback that counts. All the greats have this in common.
If Hatton, Calzaghe and Ahmed are Hypejobs as many people believe here then virtually the whole of Boxing is full of Hypejobs ! You don't achieve what these guys did being a Hypejob. I think a Hypejob is a fighter who is built up by the media before facing any real stern test and falls short at the first hurdle. A perfect and probably best example is Jeff "left Hook" Lacy... When he came up against decent fighters like Calzaghe, Taylor and even an old Jones he failed miserably. Chad Dawson is another one...P4P ranked . At least he has time to try to redeem himself.... I seem to remeber Michael Grant being built up as a possible heavyweight hope....:rofl
In terms of reputation it would have to be Mayweather. He hasn't done **** at welter besides fighting and barely beating a part-time fighter and businessman in ODLH. Oh and a de-roided Mosley.
