Hmmmm ............. thats interesting , maybe im spoilt in Liverpool we are a true fight city and the wealth of " basic boxing knowledge " is strong , or maybe i came across wrong , question , do you have to know what weight divisions is what , who holds what belt , sit behind a key board geeking around ESB to be a boxing fan ???? , or have a base knowledge of the sport ???

Good point. The fighters with large travelling support are always from well off countries. Can you imagine if the average Pacman fan from The Philippines could afford a weekend in Vegas

The statement that we are an educated boxing nation. We have some die hard and very knowledgable fans for sure (the Brit forum is a fine example of that) but boxing has been pushed right down the pecking order in this country. The reasons for that are another discussion for another thread but that's the way it's gone and that's why they can get away with calling Haye v Harrison a British superfight.

Hatton had a great following, there's no denying that, but educated boxing fans were in the minority IMO

To be a fan of the sport you've got to at least know who the big fighters are and roughly what divisions they're in. It's pretty hard to claim to be a fan of the sport if you've never heard of Froch (being English) or wouldn't question it if someone told you Khan was a super middle.

hatton and adamek spring to mind. the klits have a huge fan base but it all seems quite sterile on TV.

Julio Cesar Chavez having 130,000+ people at Estadio Azteca was bad ass.

I dont think Ricky Hatton has the biggest fanbase maybe the loudest but not the biggest. I would probably say active fighter with the largest fanbase would be Pacquiao historically would be Ali.
