The problem too is that the longer we wait for this fight the less 'valid' the result becomes.

Take Leonard v Hagler. Great fight. Two great boxers. Controversial decision. But, like it or not, the fight should have been made earlier. As a result you get many people saying 'Leonard would never have beaten the '85 version of Hagler'. Whether you agree with this or not, it doesnt matter. The fact is, had the fight happened in '85 there wouldnt be a discussion.

Same applies to Pac v Floyd. And, moreso in my opinion, to Haye v Klits. The longer it goes on, the older the Klits get. Just leaves people open to criticism when, if the fight was made tomorrow, the argument doesnt exist.

No its terrible. The world cup final in footy and rugby every 4 years, the ashes every 2 same with ryder cup; our sport doesnt have that set in stone luxury for our big occasions and this particular fight is a once in a generation fight. In most sports you know who is the number 1 with their ranking points, definite tournaments etc ours can only have that undisputed best lb for lb of this era with this 1 fight. In fact no, not this fight, this EVENT. It'll be a monstrous occasion where our non-fight fan friends will be making us chuckle as they try to talk to us about it. The money and exposure to be had here is too much to waste, the sport needs it.

In any sport, if the best don't face the best then that is never a good thing.

It's terrible for boxing if this fight doesn't happen, If it does happen the world will stand still and watch, Everyone will be talking about boxing and that's the most important thing for everyone involved, I personally think Mayweather is special and will stop Pac Man late but the fight is the most appealing on planet earth, Believe me if this fight is made expect every single record to be broken ie,PPV,Gate $$, purses everything!! It will also make the general joe take note too!!:good

It's good for Floyd it's not happening. Bad for his legacy though.

I personally feel Pac needs Mayweather more than Mayweather needs Pac..just imo like, People will always look at Pac Mans record in years to come and see them 2 losses and they'll look at Mayweathers an say look who he fought and he is still unbeaten, It's sad to say but that's what people remember.. I mean have you seen Marciano fight?? His record far outlives his ability as a fighter..;)

    Good post

Likewise everyone who says this can only be a bad thing

Without getting into the boring detail I blame Floyd, but mainly, it's just a ****ing shame it hasn't happened

Ony, I think the people that really do analyse the greatness of a fighter, who was the best of all time etc etc will always look a the competition faced/beaten.

Pac trumps Floyd big time. Do people look at Durans losses? Napoles? Ray Leonards? Michael Spinks? No, because the fighters they did beat far outweighs their losses.

Floyds wins don't make up for the fact he hasn't fought anyone near the level of many greats.

The whole 'Floyd is a 5 weight champ', which means little, as by that logic, Pacman outdoes him there too.

This time Tony, we'll have to agree to disagree. You're a big admirer of Floyd I know, so there's no point trying to convince you, and I sure as well won't be budged on the matter  :good

I'm not saying Floyd isn't good, but from an achievment AND technical standpoint there are many in front of him.

Also, Marciano was far more nuanced than you give him credit for, but I don't see many 185lb men beating him, seeing as he beat ATG's Ezzard Charles and Archie Moore, Jersey Joe Walcott, who was a very talented if sometimes inconsistent performer (certainly not so in his first meeting with The Rock) and very good Roland LaStarza. I really don't count the Louis win for anything.

So whilst I can't envision Marciano lasting long against say, Lewis, Tyson, Wlad, Bowe etc etc he was tough (Moore and Charles may have come from the lower weights, but knocked out 200+lb contenders for fun) intelligent, had an infinite reserve of stamina and was able to outhustle/outfight some of the most proven Greats of all time.

Tunney would give him the best go in terms of smaller 'Heavys' (small Cruisers by today's standards) IMO, but The Rocks ability as a fighter must not be brought into question. Charles, Moore and Walcott are clearly as technically proficient (moreso IMO) than many active fighters.

Marcianos resume is stronger than Mayweathers.

It will always be a debate, especially if they don't fight... I agree with you for the most part though. Pac has proved himself to a better degree.

I think technically Floyd is up there with the best, but damn it I want to see him fight guys who will force him to show his very best.

The Oscar fight is a black mark against Floyd because Oscar forced him back with VERY crude tactics and Floyd didn't (and therefore you have to assume couldn't) do enough in response. I thought it was a draw.

I don't like that analogy, Rob. Floyd is more like a Mourinho side - technically sound and organised but lacking in excitement. The Barcelona side that ripped United to shreds in the 2009 CL final is more like Pacquiao.

Sure Rock was as tough as they come, pulled himself off the deck a few times to knock his boy out. But you cant list those great names and forget to add their age/amount of wars they had/size flea, thats cheating :) Moore's 1 of my favourite fighters, few had the guts of this guy but lets be honest he was a light heavy-weight at his best flea you know that. Jersey Joe was like 98 when he started fighting for goodness sake he was very old in his fights with Rock. Same with the great Joe Louis. Charles is the guy who was in best shape on Rocks record but he'd had wars with old Jersey Joe and best win was 4 or 5 years previous.

We've had this with Floyd/his record etc I know we're not in agreement but again, I think you either choose not to give credit where due or over-inflated Marciano's record when its clear as crystal he never beat 1 fighter when they were at their best. With Corrales and Judah you have Floyd winning at their peak and best weight with a host ofsolid wins to boot.

Either way pac-floyd needs to happen. Whatever their need or motivation the fights a necessity for both of them and the sport in general

The Oscar fight is one of the main reasons Floyd doesn't justify the hype.

De La Hoya is not one of the Elite Greats. And that night he was very basic, and yet the shots Floyd lands through De La Hoyas shots are like WOW!

    Apparently.

So much better stuff out there. When I watch him I go 'Yawn' on YouTube I can watch Sumbu Kalambay do this even better against some fantastic opposition.

Yea its not 1 of Robs best but I think the point is they both work. And like Mourinho, Floyd could not give a rats-ass if its entertaining or not its their way, its effective and its proven to be succesful. Of course as fans the barca/pac-man style tends to be more entertaining but which is better?

Mourinho sides beat barca many a time and we'll see if his new team are up to the task at least twice this year. We only get 1 shot (barring rematch...) of seeing our 'dream match' thats how important it is
