Old time fighters who need the benefit of a good biography

Agreed, I learned quite a bit about Dillon while researching my upcoming biography about Billy Miske. Dillon was quite a fighter.

 

Many years ago Nat Fleischer wrote a biography of Benny Leonard
titled Leonard The Magnificent , which I still have...

 

I just ordered your book, the Joe Gans biography and the fearless Harry Greb. I look forward to reading them and adding them to my small yet growing collection. :good

 

Those three titles ought to keep you busy for a while.

 

There is already a bio of Jimmy Mclarnin out by Andrew Gallimore which is a decent read, as for Tom Sharkey if you have read Pollacks four books on the early heavyweight champions Sharkey is covered in them in enough detail to suffice.

Personally would like to see decent bios of Jimmy Wilde and Ezzard Charles, if thse books already exist links or authors would be much appreciated.

 

Speaking of Tom Sharkey, I recently acquired an unpublished manuscript about him written by Nat Fleischer. He titled it 'Life and Battles of Tom Sharkey, The Sailor Champion' and it was comrprised of 131 typewritten pages, or approximately 65,000 words. It appears that Fleischer actually produced a number of manuscripts that were never published for some reason. Some others included:

* History of New York in Boxing
* History of Chicago in Boxing
* Boxing's Lighter Vein
* Prize Ring in Literature
* Peter Maher

I hear that someone may be working on one about Ezzard Charles. I recently purchased a short unpublished manuscript about him by a fellow that interviewed him a number of times. It had some interesting information, but was poorly written.

 

would love a book on Blackburn, Jersey Joe.... and also one on Tommy Loughran would be great.

 

I'll borrow that Sharkey manuscript when you're done with it.

Seriously, given what I have read from him in other books and newspaper articles, that dude lived quite the life. Kind of a grifter, too. I remember reading multiple newspaper articles of him being sued regarding shady business ventures. Reminds of character who would fit right an old book from that era called "You Can't Win" by Jack Black.

Anyhow, someone with some extra time and penchant for the pen and paper should compile the facts and provide us with a complete and entertaining narrative of the gob's life.

I doubt that " Leonard The Magnificent " is still in publication..
It was printed in 1947, by O'Brien Suburban Press, Norwalk, Conn.
It had 123 pages in it by Nat Fleischer who knew the great Leonard very well...Good luck hunting...b.b.

 

I always make this same suggestion to such a query for long out of print material. Seek to borrow a copy through an inter-library loan. Photocopy, and have the duplicate bound, if you find that both feasible and desirable. Otherwise, hunt through second hand bookstores, flea markets and antique shops, where you may well stumble across related valuable rarities, often for just a few quarters or dollars.
