Kessler has been carrying serious eye injury throughout the Supersix

Kessler states that he has carried an eye injury throughout the Supersix. It has according to himself been troubling his ability to judge distance and upset his balance in both sparring and in his fights.

Jimmy Montoya prohibited Kessler from sparring after the Froch fight.

Montoya states that Kessler's injury has affected his abilities as a fighter. Mikkel Kessler has wanted to continue, but Montoya put his foot down. Good man Montoya.

 

They also do not give Ward the full blame. Apparently he already had some signs of it before that fight. Apparently the first headbuts in that fight just made it worse.

Bad.... but good luck healing up. Fingers crossed that we will not hear in 9 months that it hasn't changed and you are retiring. Fingers crossed.

Sauerland is stating that the injury is not career threatening and will heal given rest.

In other news Kessler has vacated the WBC championship. Sauerland has petitioned the WBC for the status of champion emeritus.

 

If we look away from the injury and ahead a bit - this really sucks for Mikkel.

He had a good claim to have a semi final on home or neutral soil, and a possible final on home or neutral soil. Now it looks like he will fight the winner of the super six and the winner will have (I think) the best claim to have home advantage.

 

So, he went through Ward and Froch and now when he gets the soft ball of the bunch, he's gotta stop.

 

I wonder if that was necessary?

Usually the champ has 9 month and that has several times been extended in the face of injury.

Why didn't they just keep the belt and ask to have the 9 months extended by a few months?

 

Very choking news... Hopefully Kessler´s break from boxing will heal his eyes,so he can fight the S6 winner,as they planned now... What a chok...

 

Can't see how they will get the Supersix winner in the ring unless they have something in writing or AA wins the tournament.

 

I had a torn cornea a few weeks ago (still healing) and I know how limiting it is. I fight with headgear being an amateur, so the eye is somewhat protected. His isn't, why take the risk of serious damage. Good decision from camp Kessler.

 

If Kessler cannot fight in April/May 2011, he would lose the title. "Nine months" seems a bit arbitrary to me, wouldn't a doctor say something like "a year, maybe less".

The champion emeritus bullsh*t is apparently indefinite, as the Vitaly Klitschko case showed.

If AA and Froch fight for the title, then there's a 50:50 chance (not wanting to go into a fight discussion here) that AA wins the belt.

Also, if that champion emeritus is being awarded, the winner of the Super Six (and therefore WBC champion) would probably HAVE to fight him, much like Peter had to fight Klitschko. Or lay down the title.

It seems like a smart option.

 

This is really bad news! But good move by Montoya, no reason to continure with a chance getting blind!

Before this tournament started i had either Kessler or Taylor as favorite to win all:|

 

Maybe he should just retire now. He'd be one of the few to go out on a title winning effort against an undefeated champion.

 

In Kessler's case headgear won't help. It's a muscle behind the eye he's damaged and it needs rest. No sparring only training.
