There was talk of their bout happening in that year. If Holmes had decided to carry on after his controversial loss to Spinks,it would have been a natural test and rite of passage for the up and coming Tyson. If it had been done,it would have been a hell of a better fight than their 1988 farce was. Youth would still have been served though. Holmes would n't have been as over the hill as he was in '88,but he was still way past his best,as the Spinks fights illustrated. Tyson,at this point, was already the best heavy on the scene, but not yet as quite as good as he would be in a couple of years from then. Tyson would have had problems with Larry's still effective jab,but he'd lay

plenty of hurt on Holmes, knocking him down, but the Easton Assassin would last the distance. Tyson would probably have won six or seven of the ten rounds.

hmm i don't see how it would be any different, holmes might have been as faded as he was, and he would have probably been KO'd again just because he was right there to take the punishment. if he walked right to Tyson he would get knocked out.
the holmes that fought cooney would stand a better chance

I love Holmes h2h and I do believe that Larry's timing would be much, MUCH better without the inactivity issue we saw in '88. This means that he'd be better equipped to land those lead rights, hooks and uppercuts(and of course the jab) he threw with such frequency against pressure fighters. With that said, I do believe that Tyson wins by late TKO against this version of Holmes... though Larry would have his moments and possibly even have Iron Mike in trouble at times. '78-'80 Holmes beats Tyson hands down however.

I'm utterly convinced that prime for prime, Tyson always stops Holmes. Yes, stops.

That's a reasonable conclusion. Even when they did fight, Mike had difficulty finishing Larry off, needed 45 seconds between the second and third knockdowns to close the show. (And coming within five seconds of needing another round.) Projecting knockdowns against an aging but active Holmes is one thing. Anticipating a stoppage over a veteran with survival skills like his requires a substantial leap of faith though.

I could see Holmes making it the distance but not winning. It took a lot to drop Holmes, and that Tyson righthand was a thing of beauty, the hook was not working. Probably the best striaght righthand Tyson ever threw.

 I posted it so you could see the righthand that he landed which initially hurt Holmes. Read my post prior.

Styles make fights. Holmes had tendencies that Tyson was conditioned to exploit.

Really. I know that Cus trained Mike to beat Holmes so I am really curious as to how the fight would play out in both fighters primes.. In 86 I think I would still pick Tyson, Primes I think I got Holmes...

I'm inclined to agree, not that Holmes wouldn't have his moments, I just confidently favour Tyson.

Holmes peak only lasted to about 82. That Holmes would have beated any version of Tyson. The 86 version does not.
