Thanks for the info. I ordered that and the Joe Gans and Harry Greb bio's last night. I'll be looking forward to all 3.
Anyone who thinks it is simply does not know enough about the two fighters ... Langford was a faster, stronger, much harder hitting version of Qwai .. this jibber-jab about him being easy to hit is absurd ... he was know as a very clever defensive fighter ... just because on the few clips we actually have he walks in to his opponents because he has zero fear of them in these circumstances does not take away from the thousands of words of actual fight coverage that exists ... I love Louis but he was not the most clever fighter in the world, he had trouble with crouchers and he did not take a punch like an Ali or a Holmes ... if Louis pumped his lethal jab and moved he would likely cause Langford a lot of trouble however if Langford landed hard even once it would be a different fight ... and it is very possible ... The heavyweights that defeated Langford were large, long armed boxers with clever styles, excellent jabs and had extreme patience ... none of them, not Wills, not McVey, not Johnson, not Smith, not Fulton nor Jeannette ever went into a fight with Langford and tried to outslug him out of the gate till he was way past his best days ... they all knew he would take their heads off ..
This would be two of the best finishers the division has ever produced going at it. Who knows what would happen?
OK, let's try again ... he wrote "two of the best" , not "the two best" ... :deal .. and they were two of the best ..
The impression I get of Sam Langford is a guy who stays quite low and springs into his bigger opponents lashing in some hard shots then changing angles. I may be wrong however. Billy Conn gave Joe Louis hell with this type of style, and Langford hit harder than Conn and was shorter would be more awkward for Louis to hit. I think Louis would have to be on top form here, to knock out Langford in the mid-late rounds after going through hell.
Langford was a great fighter and dangerous, however I do not believe Langford,Wills, Johnson,Jennette, etc. ever faced anyone near the 2-fisted precise and powerful combo puncher as the Brown Bomber. I think Louis beats them all but I think Langford would be a tougher fight than Wills. Blackburn had a favorable feeling towards his era like most fighters who lived in an era and I do think Langford had a universal style and would be competitive and dangerous and would offer Louis style-wise the best battle of the bunch but Louis beats them all and Wills would be the perfect style for Louis to look good. Brown Bomber beats them all
I think Langford brought to the table things that Tyson did not but Tyson also brought the ferocity of a T-Rex for portion of rds. Certain styles negate strengths and bring out weaknesses. Very few fighters have the determination to work past various and different and difficult styles and come out victorious. Who were the strongest minded and most victorious over various styles, Louis, Ali, Marciano
