What are some popular pugilistic myths that have been discredited(or need to be)?

Eh. I'll entertain that he quit after getting clipped with that counter right hand and realizing things weren't going to go much differently than last time - but people need to stop questioning the punch itself.

 

He didnt realy get it during his own title reign.

Burns gave it to him retrospectivley by being an active champion.

The best thing Hart ever did was loose to Burns.

 

Can we add Leonard being this fleet-footed dancer to the myth list?

 

What I mean by "Leonard's fight" is that he was able to fight the way he intended to... or to fight plan in fights 2 and 3... instead of fighting the way Duran forced him to fight.

I'm not trying to say that he fought Duran like Duran fought him. I'm saying he fought a dumb fight the first time... he fought just how Duran wanted him to fight... inside, ring center, and throwing a lot of punches instead of sticking and moving, using mobility and speed, etc.

 

The third fight is pretty useless on the whole, I don't see how it's even relevant considering the stages of their careers that both men (Duran in particular) were at.

As for the second fight: Leonard put on a circus act against an out of sorts Duran. He was barely even leading on the cards before the incident, mainly because he was hardly doing any effective work himself. That said, I'm pretty much talked out in regards to the second fight. It's a very overdone topic on any forum. I put a lot more stock into the first fight, personally. If you don't, that's your prerogative.

The way Leonard fought in the first fight was the way he'd fought every fight of his career up to that point, and would fight most fights afterward. That was his style, where he was most effective. Duran beat him at it when both men were at their best. That's my take.

 

Rather or not Ray Leonard's methods were more in character during their first fight or during the second fight is irrelevant. The fact is this Leonard made the adjustments needed to beat Roberto Duran. The ability to make adjustments is what separates the greats like Leonard from the very good like Duran.

On the Pep-Graves bout, I wanted to ask Don Riley about the whole matter as he wrote the piece from which this myth came. He was my favorite sports scribe here in Minnesota and I believed his account until reading the report on the bout by another reporter for the same paper Don worked for which was totally different then Don's account, ie. no punchless winning round by Willy.

Another thread on this very forum, four or five days ago. Holyfield's punching power was judged to be an average of 6.0 to 7.5 on the 10.0 scale.
