Floyd Mayweather Jr. vs. Sergio Martinez

With Floyd apparently close to announcing his next opponent, does anyone really hope that Floyd would grow some balls and fight someone like Sergio Martinez?

After the Shane fight I said Floyd beats anyone from 154 down including Manny, but the one I find most intriguing is Martinez. Long, fast, southpaw, power, slickness, size plus he's smart, can box backwards and counterpunch with the best of them and thats a hell of a package on its own but strap on a pair of fast jack rabbit feet and have a guy like that who can bounce around all night, slip shots and counter or attack in and out...:think Interesting, no?

I would probabily lean towards Floyd because he isn't nearly as small or feather fisted as people assume and I've got a hunch that Martinez is someone who's really vulnerable to being offset with a jab and timing plus Mayweather has a southpaw's nightmere in that right lead.

Thinking about it Floyd would eventually find a home for his right hand on Sergio but I'd like to see how Floyd reacts to fighting a guy who has just as much swagger and confidence as he has. Most of Floyd's opponents are beat before they even step through the ropes, Shane looked nervous, JMM knew he was too small, Hatton got pysched by the build up and just wasn't savvy enough etc...Sergio is so damn cocksure, I'd like to see how Floyd reacts to it. It'd be a great fight to see.

Btw, Walletinspector, seeing as you're the only one still up. What's the chances of my man Edner Cherry (as fellow ESBers will tell you i have a soft spot for the Cherry Bomb) upsetting this kid on a special edition of FNF's? I know Cherry Bomb always comes up short in big fights, but I think the added 5lbs will give him a little extra something...I would say "pop" but we know Cherry Bomb's KO of people like shop worn Johnston was not reality. I think there's hope for Edner as this kid he's fighting look's a one trick pony plodder with that overhand right and might get outboxed if that haymaker doesn't land. Cherry by SD??

 

I'm not exactly sober either but there's a fighter called Edner Cherry probabily considered a journeyman now, well he's back and i think headlining or at least somewhere on the card in a ESPN Friday fight night season closer.

You might remember Edner from his losing effect against desert storm Bradley. I've always had a thing for Edner Cherry and hyped him up for ages from the beggining, just one of those guys i liked to watch even though his career wasn't ever gonna be anything special. He was talented but could never put it together (where have i heard that before?)

Even though Edner has been a waste of talent, I have been nonchalantly throwing his name out for almost 2 years now. I just thought how liberating would it be to get on the Cherry Bomb bandwagon again for old times sake and start hyping the sh*t out of this? What do I have to lose except for respect and the ridicule and embarrassment to follow from my Brit ESB peers? I just thought as Cherry has never been knocked out it might be about time he feeds those muscles 5lbs of extra carbs.

I advise you though never put money on Cherry when he has a meaningful fight, beware of the decease i've been fighting for years now and keep away from the Cherry bomb. You'll be glad to hear that thankfully i've been cured and I've stopped smoking the devil's lettuce a long time ago when i realised there's no way in hell Cherry is going to amount to anything. I might stop smoking it again as he's got no chance of getting the judges' decision over a young upstart he's fighting in this ESPN season closer.

Btw, One of my relatives lives in the US and on the occassions i visited with them they would aways go on about an American football player called Deron Cherry...which probably explains why I secretly root for Edner everytime he fights.

 

I wonder what our friend Edner would say if he knew two Brits were discussing him and merits of his career, at an ungodly hour in a Mayweather/Martinez thread.
